About
The Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium sits on 77 acres in Highland Park, home to more than 8,000 animals representing over 400 species. From African elephants and Amur tigers to colorful reef fish and playful sea otters, the zoo offers an incredible range of wildlife experiences across thoughtfully designed habitats.
The grounds are divided into distinct areas including the African Savanna, Asian Forest, Bear Exhibits, and the popular PPG Aquarium. Each zone immerses you in a different ecosystem. Kids especially love the Kids Kingdom, a dedicated area with a petting zoo and interactive play spaces that bring them face-to-face with friendly farm animals.
The PPG Aquarium is a standout attraction, featuring a two-story underwater tunnel where sharks, rays, and sea turtles glide overhead. The penguin exhibit is a visitor favorite, offering an easy-to-enter space that also provides welcome shade on hot summer days. Throughout the aquarium, large viewing windows are positioned at various heights so everyone can get a great look.
Seasons change the experience here in wonderful ways. Spring brings baby animals and blooming gardens, while fall offers crisp weather and smaller crowds. The zoo hosts seasonal events year-round, from summer conservation programs to holiday light displays.
Plan for at least three to four hours to see the highlights, or a full day if you want to take it slow. Food options are available throughout the grounds, and there are plenty of shaded rest areas and benches along the paths. Parking is available on-site, and the zoo is about a 15-minute drive from downtown Pittsburgh.
Accessibility
The Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium welcomes guests using personal wheelchairs and electric mobility scooters throughout the grounds. Paved pathways connect the major exhibit areas, though some sections include hills and slopes typical of Pittsburgh's terrain. A comfortable pace with rest stops is recommended.
Guests with disabilities who use service animals are welcome as defined by the ADA and Pennsylvania Human Relations Act. ADA-trained staff greet visitors at the entrance gate and can assist with questions about accessible routes and exhibit access.
Inside the PPG Aquarium, the upper and lower levels are connected by stairs, but a service elevator is available. If you need it, ask a zoo staff member to guide you to the maintenance elevator for access to the lower shark area. This is an important detail to know before your visit so you can plan accordingly.
Accessible restrooms are located at multiple points throughout the zoo. Benches and shaded seating areas appear regularly along the main paths, providing rest opportunities between exhibits.
Contact the zoo directly at (412) 665-3640 for current details on wheelchair and scooter rentals, accessible parking locations, and any sensory accommodations that may be available. Conditions and offerings can change by season, so calling ahead helps ensure a smooth visit.
