About
Carnegie Science Center sits along the north shore of the Ohio River in Pittsburgh, offering four floors of interactive exhibits that bring science to life for visitors of all ages. From exploring the human body to experimenting with physics and engineering, there's something here that sparks curiosity at every turn.
The Buhl Planetarium and Observatory takes you on immersive journeys through the cosmos, while the Rangos Giant Cinema screens educational films on a screen four stories tall. The Highmark SportsWorks exhibit is a fan favorite, letting visitors test their athletic abilities through science-based challenges. It's one of the largest sports-themed exhibition spaces in the country.
The USS Requin, a Cold War-era submarine docked right outside the building, gives visitors a rare chance to step inside a real naval vessel and imagine life beneath the waves. Roboworld, one of the largest permanent robotics exhibitions anywhere, showcases dozens of functioning robots you can interact with directly.
Families with young children will appreciate the dedicated early learning spaces, while older visitors and science enthusiasts can dig into exhibits on energy, space, and the environment. Rotating special exhibitions keep things fresh for repeat visitors.
Carnegie Science Center is part of the Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh family, located at One Allegheny Avenue just across the river from downtown. It's easy to reach by car or public transit, and the surrounding North Shore area offers plenty of dining options. Plan for at least half a day to explore, though many families find a full day flies by quickly.
