About
Carnegie Museum of Natural History sits inside the same Beaux-Arts building as the Carnegie Museum of Art, at 4400 Forbes Avenue in Pittsburgh's Oakland neighborhood. The collection runs from mounted dinosaur skeletons in the fossil halls to a walk-through mineral and gem hall, plus galleries covering ancient Egypt, North American wildlife dioramas, and hands-on science exhibits aimed at kids. Most visitors spend two to four hours moving through the main floor and upper galleries; families with young children often stop first at the Discovery Basecamp area, which has a nursing room and seating nearby.
The museum is open Monday through Wednesday and Friday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Timed tickets are sold online in advance, and building capacity is capped at any given time, so weekend and holiday visits can mean a wait if you arrive without a reservation. General admission covers both the Natural History and Art museums since they share one ticket and one building.
Parking is in a multi-level garage entered at the corner of Forbes Avenue and South Craig Street, with a posted clearance of 6 feet 8 inches; oversized vehicles need to call ahead to arrange space. The museum sits in the middle of Pittsburgh's university and hospital district, a few blocks from Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Pittsburgh, UPMC Presbyterian, and Magee-Womens Hospital, so it works well as a stop paired with a walk through Schenley Park or a meal in Oakland before heading back into the city.
Free Wi-Fi covers the building, and there's a museum store and a cafe on site. Because the Natural History and Art museums are connected internally, a single visit can cover both collections without leaving the building, which is useful for anyone trying to limit how much walking or transferring between vehicles a day of sightseeing requires.
Accessibility
Carnegie Museum of Natural History is wheelchair accessible: the museum states that its galleries, dining areas, stores, theaters, and restrooms are all wheelchair accessible, though not every specific measurement (door widths, ramp grades) is published.
Parking is in the attached garage, entered at the corner of Forbes Avenue and South Craig Street; the museum lists accessible spaces there, with a clearance of 6 feet 8 inches and advance arrangements available for oversized vehicles by calling 412-622-3131. From the garage, a power-assist door leads into the rear of the building. Two more power-assist entrances are at the front on Forbes Avenue and at the Portal Entry.
Once inside, accessible restrooms are marked with signs and located on every floor. The museum does not publish specifics on elevator locations, interior path surfaces, or door widths, so visitors who need exact measurements should call ahead.
Standard manual wheelchairs are loaned free at the admission desk on a first-come, first-served basis, and personal wheelchairs, scooters, and walkers are welcome throughout. Service animals such as guide dogs are permitted. The museum periodically runs sensory-friendly sessions with reduced sound and lighting and a calming space stocked with ear plugs, sunglasses, and fidget toys; these require advance registration when scheduled outside normal hours, and none were listed as upcoming at the time of writing.
For anything not covered here, including ASL interpretation, assistive listening devices, or captioning, contact Visitor Services at [email protected] or 412-622-3131 at least two weeks before your visit. Personal care attendants accompanying a visitor with a disability get free admission if they identify themselves as a PCA at the ticket desk.
