About

Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park in Macon, Georgia, preserves one of the most significant archaeological sites in North America. The park protects massive earthen mounds built by Indigenous peoples, with evidence of human occupation spanning an extraordinary 17,000 years. Few places on the continent offer such a deep and continuous record of human life.

The Great Temple Mound dominates the site, rising roughly 55 feet above the Macon Plateau. It's an impressive sight from any angle. Nearby, the Earth Lodge contains a reconstructed ceremonial floor that's over 1,000 years old, complete with a clay eagle platform and seating arrangement that visitors can peer into through viewing windows. The Funeral Mound and several smaller mounds dot the grounds, connected by trails that wind through open meadows and wooded areas.

The Visitor Center is a great starting point. Inside, you'll find exhibits covering the full sweep of the site's history, from Paleo-Indian hunters to the Mississippian mound builders to the later Creek Confederacy. A short film provides helpful context before you head outside. Rangers and staff are knowledgeable and happy to answer questions about what you're seeing.

The park's trail system covers several miles, with the Main Path connecting the major mounds. Some sections are paved or have compacted surfaces suitable for strollers and wheelchairs, while other stretches cross natural terrain. The Great Temple Mound itself is accessed by stairs, so plan accordingly. Birders and nature lovers will appreciate the wetlands along the Ocmulgee River, where herons and other wildlife are common.

Ocmulgee Mounds sits just off Interstate 16, making it an easy stop for travelers passing through central Georgia. Admission is free. The park is open daily, though hours vary by season, so check before you visit. Macon itself offers plenty of dining and lodging options just minutes away. Whether you're a history enthusiast or simply curious, this park rewards a visit with a powerful sense of deep time and human connection to the land.

Accessibility

Accessibility at Ocmulgee Mounds varies across the site. The Visitor Center is fully accessible, with level entry, accessible restrooms, and well-designed exhibit spaces that accommodate wheelchair users comfortably. Accessible parking is available near the Visitor Center and key attractions.

Some trails within the park are paved or have compacted surfaces, making them suitable for wheelchairs and strollers. The Main Path connects several major features and is relatively flat. However, the Great Temple Mound is only reachable via three sets of stairs and is not accessible to wheelchair users. The Earth Lodge has a low, narrow entrance that may also present challenges for visitors with mobility limitations.

In 2025, the park began offering all-terrain wheelchair hikes, expanding access to areas that were previously difficult to reach. This program allows visitors with mobility challenges to experience more of the grounds with specialized equipment. Contact the park directly for scheduling and availability of these guided experiences.

The park's open meadow areas and wide paths provide good conditions for visitors using mobility aids on level ground. Service animals are welcome throughout the park.

For visitors with sensory needs, the outdoor setting is generally calm, though the Visitor Center film area may be darker and louder. Staff members are available to assist and answer questions.

Contact the park at (478) 752-8257 or visit the NPS website for current accessibility details, trail conditions, and information about adaptive programs. Conditions can change seasonally, so calling ahead is recommended, especially if you plan to visit specific mounds or trails.
