About
The Fox Theatre opened in 1929 in a building the Atlanta Yaarab Shriners started as their temple. When construction costs outran the budget, the Shriners leased the unfinished building to movie chain owner William Fox, and architects Marye, Alger and Vinour finished it in a mix of Moorish and Egyptian Revival styles. The auditorium ceiling is painted to look like a night sky, with small lights standing in for stars, and the lobbies carry the same Egyptian and Moorish detailing throughout.
Inside, the Fox seats about 4,678 people and hosts touring Broadway productions, concerts, comedy shows, and performances by the Atlanta Ballet. The Moller theater organ, nicknamed Mighty Mo, has roughly 3,622 pipes and still plays before some screenings. Guided building tours run through the Egyptian Ballroom and other rooms not open during regular shows, usually taking about an hour; check the Fox's website for the current tour schedule, since it varies by season.
The building faced demolition in the 1970s before a citywide fundraising effort, known as the Save the Fox campaign, paid off the mortgage and kept it standing. That history is part of why the interior is largely unchanged from 1929, including original stairwells and doorways in some sections that a modern venue would have replaced.
The Fox sits at 660 Peachtree Street in Midtown Atlanta, a block from MARTA's North Avenue Station and within walking distance of Midtown restaurants. A performance runs two to three hours depending on the show. Check foxtheatre.org for the current schedule, tour dates, and ticket prices before you go, since none of these are fixed year to year.
Accessibility
The Fox Theatre is accessible to wheelchair users for most of a visit, with one firm limit: accessible seating is only on the orchestra level, since no elevator reaches the balcony.
Parking and arrival: accessible spaces are in the Yellow Lot on Peachtree Street, the Georgian Terrace deck, and the Orange Lot at Peachtree and 3rd Street. Call the box office at 855-285-8499 ahead of time to confirm space. Ask the attendant on arrival which accessible space is nearest the entrance you need.
Entrance and getting around: the main entrance is step-free from Peachtree Street through the Arcade, and the street corners leading up to it have dropped curbs. A lobby elevator reaches the First and Second Dress levels; a second ADA elevator serves the Marquee Club. The same 2019 review described a rainy-night exit where the only door offered had steps and a loose handrail, with staff initially unable to suggest a step-free alternative. If a staff member points you toward an unfamiliar door, ask directly whether it is step-free, or plan to leave the way you came in.
Restrooms: accessible restrooms are in the Administrative Offices off the Main Lobby, each a private room with the sink inside and an automatic door.
Services: wheelchair loans get you from the curb to your seat, and orchestra aisle seats with removable arms make transfers easier; up to three companion tickets are sold at the same price as the accessible seat. Free Phonic Ear listening devices are available at every performance, first come first served (bring ID to borrow one). ASL interpreting is offered at the first Sunday matinee of any show running a full week or longer, and by request with two weeks' notice for other dates. GalaPro closed captioning works without notice for several long-running shows and by request with four weeks' notice for the rest.
Before you go: call 404-881-2016 with specific mobility or seating questions, and confirm your exit route at the same time you arrange seating.
