About
The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center sits on the banks of the Ohio River in downtown Cincinnati, right where freedom-seekers once crossed from slave states into free territory. This striking museum tells the story of the Underground Railroad, the struggle against slavery, and the ongoing fight for freedom around the world.
Three pavilions house permanent and rotating exhibits that bring history to life through artifacts, interactive displays, and personal stories. You'll find a preserved slave pen from a Kentucky farm, powerful film presentations in the American Legacy Theatre, and exhibits connecting historical freedom movements to modern human rights issues. Plan for three to four hours to take it all in.
The museum's location along the Cincinnati riverfront makes it easy to pair with other attractions. The Banks entertainment district, Great American Ball Park, and Smale Riverfront Park are all within walking distance. Parking garages nearby serve the whole riverfront area.
Visitors of all ages connect deeply with the exhibits here. The stories are told with honesty and respect, making this a meaningful destination for families, students, and anyone interested in American history. Staff and volunteers throughout the museum are knowledgeable and eager to help visitors get the most from their experience.
The Freedom Center hosts regular special events, live performances, and educational programs. Check their calendar before your visit to see what's happening during your trip. General admission is affordable, and discounts are available for children, seniors, and military families.
Accessibility
The building features ramps, elevators, and wide pathways throughout all exhibit areas.
Wheelchairs and electric convenience vehicles (ECVs) are available to borrow free of charge at the front desk on a first-come, first-served basis. A driver's license or credit card is held as a deposit until the device is returned. Note that wheelchairs and ECVs must remain inside the museum and cannot be taken outside the building.
Accessible restrooms are located on the first, third, and fourth floors of the museum. Elevators connect all levels, so every exhibit space is reachable without stairs. Service dogs are welcome throughout the facility.
The museum's downtown Cincinnati location means accessible parking is available in nearby garages that serve the riverfront district. The riverfront walkways connecting to the museum entrance are paved and level.
For questions about specific accessibility needs, including sensory accommodations or assisted listening devices, contact the Freedom Center directly before your visit. Staff at the front desk can also help with any accessibility requests when you arrive.
