About
The Cleveland Museum of Art is an encyclopedic art museum in the University Circle neighborhood, with collections spanning Egyptian antiquities, European paintings, Asian art, and contemporary work. The 1916 building anchors a campus that has grown through several additions, and galleries wrap around a glass-roofed atrium used for events and casual seating.
Most visitors spend two to three hours moving through a handful of collection areas rather than the entire building in one visit. Galleries are organized by region and period, so a family can pick two or three wings and skip the rest without losing a clear path through the building. The museum's ArtLens app offers audio content and gallery maps that work with phone screen readers, which helps with planning a route in advance.
General admission is free as of 2026, though some special exhibitions and events carry a separate ticket price. The museum is open Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Wednesday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. It is closed on Mondays and on several major holidays, including January 1, Thanksgiving, and December 25.
University Circle sits about fifteen minutes east of downtown Cleveland by car, off Jeptha Drive and East Boulevard. The Cleveland Botanical Garden, Case Western Reserve University, Severance Music Center, and the Cleveland Museum of Natural History are all within walking distance, so the museum works well as one stop on a longer day in the neighborhood. Tour buses unload at the main entrance facing Wade Oval, the green space at the center of University Circle.
Accessibility
The Cleveland Museum of Art is wheelchair accessible through its north entrance, though the historic south steps facing Wade Oval are not usable by anyone who cannot climb stairs.
Parking closest to the accessible entrance is on the top level of the museum's garage, off Jeptha Drive, a short walk from the north doors. The garage also has spaces on level P2 that connect to the museum's lower level through an interior tunnel. Garage parking runs $14 for nonmembers and $7 for members, and there is no prepaid option; pay by card or cash at the entrance.
Inside, elevators and escalators connect all floors, and the museum states that all public restrooms and water fountains are accessible. Free wheelchairs and strollers are available at the entrance on a first-come, first-served basis, and motorized wheelchairs are allowed throughout, but the museum does not provide staff to push a wheelchair or escort visitors.
Service animals are welcome. On the third Saturday of each month, the museum opens one wing early, from 9 to 10 a.m., for Sensory-Friendly Saturdays, with a designated calming corner and a slower pace before the building opens to the general public; the same Saturday morning also hosts Art for Every Body tours led by two docents.
The museum's website does not publish specifics on door widths, braille or tactile signage, hearing loop or assistive listening coverage, or ASL interpretation for regular visits, so call visitor services at 216-421-7350 or email [email protected] ahead of a visit if any of those are essential.
