About

Nashville Zoo at Grassmere sits on 188 acres along Nolensville Pike, just minutes from downtown Nashville. What began as a historic farm in 1810 has grown into one of Tennessee's most beloved family destinations, home to nearly 3,000 animals from around the world.

Visitors can explore exhibits ranging from African savanna species like giraffes and elephants to colorful lorikeets you can feed by hand. The Jungle Gym, one of the largest community-built playgrounds in the country, gives kids room to climb, swing, and explore. A newer addition, Thisbe & Noah's Promise Park, was specifically designed to incorporate equipment for children with all types of disabilities, making play truly inclusive.

The historic Grassmere Farm offers a quieter experience. Listed on the National Register of Historic Homes, the 1810 farmhouse and its surrounding grounds let visitors step back in time while meeting heritage breed farm animals. It's a nice change of pace from the busier zoo exhibits.

Throughout the year, the zoo hosts seasonal events, keeper talks, and animal encounters that bring visitors closer to wildlife. The layout is designed for comfortable walking, with shaded rest areas and dining options spread across the grounds.

For families planning a visit, the zoo is open year-round with seasonal hours. Arriving early on weekdays tends to mean smaller crowds and more active animals. Parking is available on-site, and the zoo's location makes it easy to pair with other Nashville attractions. Whether you're watching river otters play, feeding stingrays, or strolling through the gardens, Nashville Zoo offers a day that's both fun and genuinely welcoming to everyone.

Accessibility

Nashville Zoo is fully ADA accessible and designed with mobility in mind. Paved paths wind through the zoo's exhibits, with ramps provided where needed. Visitors who need mobility assistance can rent manual wheelchairs or electric scooters at the zoo entrance on a first-come, first-served basis.

Accessible restrooms are available throughout the grounds. The zoo's Thisbe & Noah's Promise Park, built in partnership with the Nashville-based nonprofit Thisbe & Noah, features playground equipment specifically designed for children with all types of disabilities, making it one of the few truly inclusive play spaces at a major zoo.

The terrain is generally flat and manageable, though some areas may have gentle slopes. Stroller and wheelchair-friendly paths connect all major exhibits and dining areas.

For visitors with specific accommodation needs beyond mobility, contact Nashville Zoo directly at (615) 833-1534 or visit nashvillezoo.org to ask about sensory-friendly events, service animal policies, and any additional accessibility services. The zoo staff makes a concerted effort to ensure all guests can enjoy their visit comfortably.
