About

Moody Gardens is a complex on Galveston Island organized around three glass pyramids, each a separate exhibit hall. The Aquarium Pyramid holds a 1.5-million-gallon tank with penguins, seals, stingrays, and sharks. The Rainforest Pyramid grows a planted rainforest with Amazon river otters, saki monkeys, and other species, arranged over multiple levels. The Discovery Pyramid runs an Audience Recognition Theater, currently showing a 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea interactive program, along with rotating exhibits such as Skeletown.

Outside the pyramids, Palm Beach is a private sand beach with a wave pool, a lazy river, water slides, and a splash pad, plus a summer concert series. A ropes course billed as the tallest on the Gulf Coast includes a 500-foot zip line. The property also runs 3D and 4D theaters with some of the largest screens in Texas, a golf course with pickleball courts, and a hotel with a spa and marina for overnight stays.

Because the pyramids, the beach, and the ropes course are separate ticketed sections spread across the property, seeing more than one in a day means budgeting time to walk or shuttle between them. Exhibits inside the Discovery Pyramid rotate, so what is showing depends on when you visit. Animal encounters with stingrays, penguins, seals, and river otters run as guided add-ons rather than being part of general admission.

The address is 1 Hope Boulevard on Galveston Island. Houston is about 51 miles away and roughly an hour north by car on I-45 South, longer on weekends and cruise ship days when causeway traffic backs up. Galveston's Seawall Boulevard and the historic Strand District are both a short drive from the property, so a Moody Gardens visit is easy to pair with the rest of the island.

Accessibility

Moody Gardens is wheelchair accessible for the most part. The venue states that every building on the property, including all three pyramids, has a ramped entrance, and every restroom is wheelchair accessible. The gap is in the documentation: general access is confirmed, but interior details like door widths and path grades are not published, so call ahead if you use a wide power chair.

Parking has more than 70 accessible spaces with curb ramps, per the property's own accessibility page. The Visitor Center, next to the main lot, is one of two spots, along with the Aquarium Pyramid, where you can pick up a Moody Gardens wheelchair at no charge on a first-come basis. Staff hold a driver's license as a deposit and return it when the chair comes back.

Entrances across the property are ramped, and the Rainforest Pyramid's entrance is documented as step-free. Inside that pyramid, visitors reach the upper walkway by elevator or by stairs, so a wheelchair user does not have to climb to see the canopy level. Moody Gardens has not published the same level of detail for getting around inside the Aquarium or Discovery pyramids.

Theaters have accessible seating with removable arms and room to stay in your own chair, and staff can provide closed captioning devices on request. Service animals recognized under the ADA are welcome throughout the property, with one documented exception: they are not permitted inside the Rainforest Pyramid.

Call the main line at (409) 683-4558 before you go if you need specifics beyond what is listed here, want a wheelchair held for you, or plan to bring a service animal near the Rainforest Pyramid. Bring photo ID for the wheelchair deposit.
