About
Big Bend sits in far West Texas where the Rio Grande curves through the Chihuahuan Desert and the Chisos Mountains rise from the desert floor. The park spans five developed areas: Panther Junction, the Chisos Basin, Persimmon Gap, Rio Grande Village, and the Fossil Discovery Exhibit, which covers the area's fossil record along the road between Marathon and the park.
Most visits mix driving with short stops rather than a single attraction. People move between the visitor centers, walk short interpretive trails such as Panther Path near Panther Junction and the paved Window View Trail in the Chisos Basin, and stop at overlooks like Sotol Vista, which has accessible parking and a barrier-free path to the view. The Rio Grande Village Nature Trail leads to a quarter-mile boardwalk over a wetland. Because the developed areas sit far apart, one day covers only part of the park, so many visitors split a trip between the desert lowlands and the Chisos Basin.
The park charges $30 per private vehicle for a pass valid seven days, current as of 2026. Overnight options include Chisos Mountains Lodge, which has an accessible room with wide doorways and a roll-in shower, plus campgrounds at Chisos Basin, Rio Grande Village, and Cottonwood.
Alpine, Texas is the nearest town with full services such as groceries, a pharmacy, and motels, and sits about 100 miles and just under two hours from the park by US-90 and US-385. Terlingua and Marathon are closer but smaller. Inside the park, gas is sold only at Panther Junction and keeps limited hours, so most drivers fill up before leaving Alpine.
Accessibility
Big Bend National Park is accessible at its developed areas but not evenly accessible across its desert and mountain backcountry. The park's own accessibility page says not all facilities are fully accessible, though rangers assist visitors with special needs on request.
Parking and entrances: each of the five visitor centers, Panther Junction, Chisos Basin, Persimmon Gap, Rio Grande Village, and the Fossil Discovery Exhibit, has reserved parking and ramp access into the building.
Getting around: paved or maintained paths cover a few short stretches. Panther Path is a roughly 100-yard paved walk with interpretive plaques outside Panther Junction. Window View Trail in the Chisos Basin is a 0.3-mile paved trail with a gradual descent to the viewpoint and benches along the way. The first quarter mile of the Rio Grande Village Nature Trail is a floating boardwalk, then it turns to dirt. Sotol Vista has accessible parking, an accessible vault toilet, and a barrier-free path to the overlook. Most other trails and the Santa Elena Canyon overlook are not paved and cross rougher ground.
Restrooms: wheelchair-accessible restrooms are at all four staffed visitor centers, at Chisos Mountains Lodge, and at two campground sites, Chisos Basin site 37 and Rio Grande Village site 14. The Fossil Discovery Exhibit has an accessible vault toilet. The Rio Grande Village Store has restrooms with grab bars that the park does not call fully accessible.
Services and staff: rangers help visitors with special needs on request, and Panther Junction keeps a TDD available. The park's phone and TDD lines, 432-477-2251 and TDD 432-477-2370, can confirm current conditions before a visit. Chisos Mountains Lodge has one room, D2, built for wheelchair use, with wide doorways, lever handles, tile floors, and a roll-in shower with grab bars. Service animals are allowed on all trails and in all facilities as long as they stay leashed and under control.
Practical tips: call ahead, since the park is large and its services sit far apart across five separate developed areas. Fuel inside the park is limited to Panther Junction, so plan routes and rest stops around that.
