About

Little River Canyon National Preserve protects one of the deepest gorges east of the Mississippi, carved by the Little River as it flows atop Lookout Mountain in northeast Alabama. Established in 1992, this preserve offers visitors a rare chance to experience dramatic waterfalls, forested bluffs, sandstone cliffs, and pristine pools in a setting that feels wonderfully remote yet remains surprisingly approachable.

The preserve's crown jewel is Little River Falls, a stunning 45-foot cascade where the river plunges over sandstone bedrock into the canyon below. It's the kind of sight that stops you mid-sentence. A paved path and boardwalk lead to an overlook where you can take in the full spectacle, hear the roar of the water, and feel the cool mist rising from below.

Canyon Rim Drive winds along the edge of the gorge for roughly 23 miles, offering multiple pulloffs and overlooks with sweeping views into the canyon. Each stop reveals something different - a new angle on the cliffs, a glimpse of the river far below, or a quiet stretch of forest. The drive itself is a highlight, especially during fall when the hardwood canopy turns brilliant shades of orange and red.

The Canyon Center serves as the preserve's visitor hub, where you can pick up maps, talk with rangers, and learn about the area's geology and cultural history. Staff are knowledgeable and happy to help visitors plan their time based on ability level and interests.

Beyond sightseeing, the preserve offers swimming holes, kayaking on calmer stretches of the river, picnicking, and backcountry hiking for those seeking more rugged terrain. Wildlife is abundant - keep an eye out for hawks circling above the canyon rim and wildflowers dotting the forest floor in spring.

The preserve is free to enter and open year-round, though some facilities may have seasonal hours. Spring brings peak waterfall flow, summer offers swimming, and autumn delivers spectacular color. Winter visits are quieter, with crisp views through bare trees. No matter when you visit, Little River Canyon rewards you with raw, uncrowded natural beauty.

Accessibility

Little River Falls, the preserve's most popular attraction, features an ADA-accessible boardwalk and paved path leading to the falls overlook. This allows wheelchair users and visitors with mobility challenges to enjoy close-up views of the dramatic 45-foot waterfall without traversing rough terrain.

Canyon Rim Drive provides a vehicle-based way to experience the preserve's scenic beauty. Several pulloffs and overlooks along the drive offer views into the gorge, though the accessibility of individual overlook areas may vary. Some viewpoints have paved surfaces while others may involve uneven ground.

The Canyon Center (visitor center) is the best starting point for visitors with accessibility needs. Rangers can advise on which areas are most accessible and help plan a visit suited to individual abilities.

Beyond the falls boardwalk, most trails in the preserve follow rugged, unpaved terrain with significant elevation changes and are not wheelchair accessible. The backcountry areas involve steep, rocky paths better suited to visitors with full mobility.

Parking is available at the falls area and at pulloffs along Canyon Rim Drive. Contact the preserve directly at (256) 845-9605 for current details on accessible parking spaces, restroom accessibility, and any recent improvements to pathways or facilities. Conditions can change seasonally, so calling ahead is especially helpful if you have specific accessibility requirements.
