About

The USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park sits on the western shore of Mobile Bay, offering visitors a chance to step aboard one of America's most decorated World War II battleships. The USS Alabama served in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters, earning nine battle stars before being brought to Mobile in 1964 as a permanent memorial.

The park spans 175 acres and features far more than just the battleship. You can also tour the USS Drum, a WWII submarine that completed 13 war patrols in the Pacific. Across the grounds, you'll find over 30 aircraft on display, from Cold War-era jets to historic propeller planes. Military vehicles, artillery pieces, and memorials round out the collection, making this one of the most comprehensive military parks in the country.

Walking the decks of the Alabama is the centerpiece experience. You'll see the massive 16-inch gun turrets, officer quarters, the mess hall, and the bridge where commanders directed operations. Interpretive displays throughout the ship bring the stories of its crew to life, and many veterans' personal items and photographs are on exhibit.

The park hosts special events throughout the year, including Veterans Day ceremonies and holiday celebrations. The gift shop offers military memorabilia and souvenirs, and there are picnic areas where families can relax and enjoy views of the bay.

Plan to spend at least two to three hours here, though military history enthusiasts could easily fill a full day. The park is open year-round, with the mild Gulf Coast climate making visits comfortable in most seasons. Spring and fall are especially pleasant. Admission is affordable, with discounts available for military personnel, seniors, and children.

Whether you're a history buff, a veteran, or a family looking for something educational and memorable, the USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park delivers a powerful, hands-on connection to American military history.

Accessibility

The USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park offers partial accessibility for visitors with mobility challenges. The outdoor grounds, including areas around the aircraft displays, military vehicles, and memorials, are generally accessible on paved pathways. However, access aboard the battleship itself is limited for wheelchair users. The ship's interior features narrow passageways, steep ladders, and raised hatchway thresholds that are difficult or impossible to pass with a wheelchair or mobility device. Some areas of the main deck may be reachable, but much of the below-deck experience will require climbing. The submarine USS Drum presents similar challenges, with very tight interior spaces.

That said, visitors who cannot board the ships can still enjoy a full experience exploring the extensive outdoor exhibits, which include over 30 aircraft and numerous ground vehicles and memorials spread across the park grounds.

ADA-compliant parking is available in the main lot near the entrance. Restroom facilities on the grounds are accessible. Staff members are generally helpful and can advise on which areas are most accessible for visitors with specific needs.

For visitors with sensory sensitivities, the park is mostly an outdoor experience with open-air displays. It tends to be quieter on weekdays outside of peak tourist season.

Visitors with specific accessibility questions should contact the park directly before their visit to confirm current conditions and available accommodations, as features may change with renovations or seasonal operations.
