About

Kentucky Science Center is a hands-on science museum on West Main Street in downtown Louisville, on the stretch known as Museum Row alongside the Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory, the Frazier History Museum, and the Muhammad Ali Center, all within a few blocks. The main building covers roughly 150,000 square feet across three public floors, with exhibits built around touching, building, and testing rather than reading wall text.

Inside, younger kids gravitate to KidZone, a hands-on area with several activity sections, while the Science Education Wing runs workshop labs and a four-story digital theater screens science and nature films. Traveling and rotating exhibits change through the year, and school field trips, camps, and family programs fill much of the calendar, so which galleries are open can shift week to week. AAA's trip-planning guide estimates a typical visit at about three hours, enough to work through one or two floors without rushing.

The center is open seven days a week from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. as of 2026, with closures on some holidays. Ticket prices are tiered by age (children 2 to 12, adults 13 and up, and free for children under 2), with current dollar amounts posted at the museum's own visit page. An annual membership starts at $139 and includes unlimited exhibit access.

Parking is not attached to the building. The closest lot sits at 801 W. Washington Street, on the other side of the block, and charges $15 a day, or $8 for members, credit or debit only; on-street parking and several downtown garages are also within walking distance. Because the center sits on Museum Row, a single garage or parking spot can cover a visit here along with the Slugger Museum or the Frazier next door.

Accessibility

Kentucky Science Center is wheelchair accessible: ramps, elevators, and accessible restrooms serve every floor of the Main Street building, though there is no attached on-site accessible parking lot.

Arriving and parking: the nearest lot is a separate paid lot at 801 W. Washington Street, reached on foot by a wheelchair-accessible overpass from the lot's eastern side to a side entrance on Main Street. Drivers can also use the marked loading and unloading zone directly in front of the main entrance for drop-off, and school or charter buses may unload there too.

Entrance and getting around: the main doors open automatically with a push-button. Once inside, elevators and ramps connect all three floors, so a wheelchair or scooter user can reach every gallery without stairs. The center's Google Business listing also lists wheelchair-accessible seating and an assistive listening (hearing loop) system, though the museum's own accessibility page does not name which rooms have them.

Restrooms and family needs: wheelchair-accessible restrooms are on every floor. Family restrooms are on the first and third floors, and changing tables are in the men's and women's restrooms on floors one through three.

Services: the museum is FEAT of Louisville's first Level 1 Autism-Friendly certified business. It runs limited-capacity sensory-friendly events with dimmed lighting and lowered sound, and keeps sensory bags with noise-cancelling headphones and calming items at the ticket desk or gift shop for anyone who feels overwhelmed mid-visit. Its free GoodMaps app gives turn-by-turn indoor wayfinding for visitors who are blind or low vision. Service animals are welcome throughout, and a certified therapist accompanying a guest can get in free by calling ahead.

The website does not publish anything about Braille or tactile signage, captioning, ASL interpretation, or wheelchair rental, so call 502-561-6100 ahead of a visit if any of those are essential.
