About

The Idaho Botanical Garden sits on 15 acres of beautifully cultivated land in Boise, originally part of the Old Idaho State Penitentiary grounds. What was once a barren prison yard has been transformed into a living collection of themed gardens that celebrate Idaho's diverse plant life and horticultural traditions.

Visitors can wander through more than a dozen distinct garden areas, including the English Garden, the Meditation Garden, a Children's Adventure Garden, and native plant displays that showcase the region's natural beauty. The gardens shift with the seasons - spring brings waves of tulips and daffodils, summer fills the beds with roses and perennials, and fall offers warm foliage colors throughout the grounds. During winter, the popular Winter Garden aGlow event transforms the space with thousands of lights.

The garden is a genuinely relaxing place to spend a few hours. Benches are scattered throughout, making it easy to sit and enjoy a particular view or simply rest. The Children's Adventure Garden is a hit with families, featuring interactive elements that encourage kids to explore plants through touch and play.

For practical planning, the walk from the admission kiosk to the more cultivated and shaded sections of the garden is about 212 yards. Paths vary in surface - you'll find brick, stone, gravel, and grass underfoot depending on which areas you're exploring. Strollers can be pushed on most paths. The garden hosts concerts and special events at Outlaw Field throughout the year, so it's worth checking the calendar before your visit.

The Idaho Botanical Garden is open year-round, though hours change by season. It's a wonderful stop whether you're a serious gardener looking for inspiration or simply someone who wants a quiet afternoon surrounded by green. The staff and volunteers are known for being friendly and helpful, happy to answer questions or point you toward whatever's in peak bloom.

Accessibility

Much of the Idaho Botanical Garden is wheelchair accessible, though visitors should be aware that path surfaces vary. You'll encounter brick, stone, gravel, and grass pathways throughout the grounds. While there are minimal bumps, the surfaces are not uniformly smooth, so powered chairs or all-terrain models will handle some areas better than standard manual wheelchairs.

The garden offers free all-terrain wheelchairs at no charge, available on a first-come, first-served basis. This is a standout feature that makes the grounds more accessible for visitors who might otherwise struggle with the mixed path surfaces. Strollers can be pushed on most paths as well.

The walk from the admission kiosk to the more cultivated, shaded portion of the garden is 212 yards long - something to keep in mind when planning your visit and pacing your energy.

For concerts and events at Outlaw Field, visitors with mobility impairment disabilities and up to three companions may enter early through the Member Line. Guest service personnel are available to assist with early access or any other needs during events.

Contact the Idaho Botanical Garden directly for current details on accessible parking locations, accessible restroom availability, and any sensory accommodations that may be offered. Conditions and available services can change seasonally, so calling ahead is always a good idea - staff can help you plan your route through the gardens based on your specific accessibility needs.
