About

Carlsbad Caverns National Park protects over 100 caves formed millions of years ago beneath the Chihuahuan Desert of southeastern New Mexico. The star attraction is Carlsbad Cavern itself, a massive underground chamber filled with extraordinary stalactites, stalagmites, and other limestone formations that seem almost otherworldly in their scale and beauty.

The Big Room is the park's crown jewel. Spanning roughly 8.2 acres, it's one of the largest underground chambers in North America. A paved trail loops through the space, passing towering columns, delicate draperies, and deep pools of crystal-clear water. The formations have evocative names like the Bottomless Pit, the Hall of Giants, and the Temple of the Sun.

Visitors can enter the cavern two ways. The Natural Entrance route follows a steep, switchback path down through the cave's natural opening, a dramatic 1.25-mile descent. Alternatively, an elevator drops you 750 feet directly to the Underground Rest Area, where the Big Room trail begins. The underground area includes restrooms and a snack bar.

Above ground, the park offers desert hiking trails, a well-equipped visitor center with exhibits and a bookstore, and one of nature's great spectacles: the bat flight program. From late May through October, hundreds of thousands of Brazilian free-tailed bats spiral out of the cave entrance at dusk. Rangers give talks before the flight, and the amphitheater seating makes it a memorable evening experience.

The park sits about 20 miles southwest of the city of Carlsbad, with the entrance road climbing through the scenic Walnut Canyon. Plan to spend at least half a day exploring the cavern, and check the park website for current elevator schedules and seasonal programs before your visit.

Accessibility

Carlsbad Caverns offers accessible parking, picnicking, dining, and visitor center services at the surface level. The visitor center includes accessible restrooms and exhibit areas.

The park provides elevator service into and out of the cavern, descending 750 feet to the Underground Rest Area. From there, the Big Room Trail is the only wheelchair-accessible route in the cavern. This one-mile paved loop passes many of the cave's most impressive formations. The underground level also has restrooms and a snack bar near the elevator.

It's important to know the trail's limitations. The Big Room Trail is not ADA-approved, and the National Park Service recommends it should only be attempted with assistance. The path can be wet from dripping water, making it slippery, bumpy, and uneven in places. Barriers and signs mark portions that are inaccessible by wheelchair due to steep grades and narrow sections. Maps showing wheelchair-accessible areas are available at the visitor center.

The Natural Entrance Trail is not accessible, as it has a steep grade exceeding 15 percent. Wheelchair and walker users should plan to enter and exit exclusively through the elevator. An accessibility guide brochure is available from the park with detailed trail information.

For the bat flight program, the amphitheater at the natural entrance has seating but visitors should confirm current accessible seating options. Contact the park directly at 575-785-2232 or visit the park's accessibility page for the most current information on services and accommodations.
