About

Valles Caldera National Preserve protects a vast volcanic caldera, grassland valleys, forests, wildlife habitat, and backcountry routes in the Jemez Mountains of New Mexico. Visitors come for scenic drives, wildlife viewing, hiking, fishing, seasonal programs, the Welcome Station, the Volcano Discovery Center, and backcountry vehicle access when available. The official accessibility page is especially useful because it identifies both recent improvements and meaningful limitations.

NPS states that the Welcome Station is wheelchair-accessible, though assistance may be needed to pass over the access-ramp threshold and door threshold. The front porch has wheelchair-accessible, colorblind spotting scopes. A wheelchair ramp was installed at the Volcano Discovery Center in October 2024, making that building accessible to wheelchair users, with planned interior traffic-flow improvements noted for 2025.

Restroom access is mixed. The official page says two vault toilets across the parking lot from the Welcome Station are wheelchair-accessible, but the gravel parking lot is not graded for accessibility. It also lists an accessible portable toilet near the Volcano Discovery Center and additional accessible portable toilets along the backcountry vehicle route in Valle San Antonio, while cautioning that approaches to those facilities are not graded for accessibility and assistance may be required.

The preserve has also made access changes for driving and publications. NPS describes a backcountry vehicle gate in the Cabin District that lets users enter an access code from their vehicle rather than getting out to manage a cable gate and padlock. The official map and guide are available in braille and large print at the Welcome Station or Volcano Discovery Center, with an accessible digital copy available online. Trails are not currently graded for accessibility, and substrates vary from dirt and gravel to overgrown grass, so visitors should treat backcountry routes as variable and call ahead for current conditions.

Accessibility

NPS states that the Welcome Station is wheelchair-accessible, though assistance may be needed at the ramp and door thresholds. Wheelchair-accessible, colorblind spotting scopes are available on the front porch.

The Volcano Discovery Center received a wheelchair ramp in October 2024 and is now described as accessible to wheelchair users. The park also notes a newer backcountry vehicle gate that lets authorized users enter a code from inside a vehicle instead of getting out repeatedly to operate the older cable-gate system.

Accessible restrooms are available but approaches can be difficult. Two wheelchair-accessible vault toilets are across the gravel parking lot from the Welcome Station, but the lot is not graded for accessibility. Accessible portable toilets are near the Volcano Discovery Center and along the backcountry vehicle route, though approaches are not graded and assistance may be required.

Braille and large-print copies of the official map and guide are available at park contact stations. Service animals that meet the ADA definition are permitted. Trails are not currently graded for accessibility and use dirt, gravel, and overgrown grass surfaces, so visitors using mobility devices should verify conditions before committing to a route.
