About

Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge protects one of the largest remaining expanses of tidal salt marsh on the Atlantic Coast. Established in 1937, this 16,000-acre sanctuary in Smyrna, Delaware serves as a critical stopover for migratory birds along the Atlantic Flyway. It's a place where nature puts on a show, and you're invited to watch.

The refuge's 12-mile wildlife drive is the centerpiece of any visit. Wind through diverse habitats including freshwater pools, tidal marshes, upland forests, and agricultural fields. Each season brings something different. Spring and fall migrations fill the skies with shorebirds, waterfowl, and raptors. Summer brings nesting birds and lush greenery. Winter offers stark beauty and bald eagle sightings.

Seven walking trails let you stretch your legs and get closer to the action. Trails range from short boardwalk strolls to longer woodland paths, so there's something for every ability level. Three observation towers provide elevated views over the marsh, perfect for spotting great blue herons, snow geese, or white-tailed deer.

The visitor center is a great first stop. Inside you'll find interpretive exhibits about the refuge's ecosystems, an auditorium showing nature films, and information about current wildlife sightings. The Friends of Bombay Hook operate a nature gift shop here as well.

Photographers love Bombay Hook. The combination of open water, marsh grasses, and abundant wildlife creates stunning compositions. Early morning and late afternoon light over the salt marsh is particularly special.

Practical details: the refuge is open daily from sunrise to sunset. The visitor center has seasonal hours, so check before you go. There's a small entrance fee per vehicle. Hunting is permitted on select dates, and all roads and trails close on those days, though the visitor center and restrooms remain open. Bring binoculars, water, and insect repellent, especially in warmer months. The mosquitoes here have earned their reputation.
