About

Longwood Gardens is one of the great botanical gardens in the world, a stunning 1,100-acre property originally developed by Pierre S. du Pont in the early 20th century. Located in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, just across the Delaware border, it's a major draw for visitors throughout the mid-Atlantic region and a beloved destination for anyone who appreciates the beauty of cultivated and natural spaces.

The gardens feature over 20 indoor and outdoor garden areas. The massive Conservatory alone covers more than four acres, housing exotic orchids, tropical plants, and seasonal displays that change throughout the year. Outside, you'll find Italian-inspired water gardens, a peaceful meadow garden, towering tree houses, and one of the most impressive fountain systems in the country. The Main Fountain Garden puts on choreographed shows with jets reaching up to 175 feet in the air, especially breathtaking during evening illuminated performances in summer.

Visitors can easily spend an entire day here. The property includes multiple dining options, from casual cafes to a full-service restaurant, along with a well-stocked gift shop. Seasonal events are a highlight - holiday displays with thousands of lights in winter, outdoor concerts in summer, and fireworks paired with fountain shows on select evenings.

For those planning a visit, Longwood is open year-round, though hours vary by season. Timed tickets are required, and purchasing in advance is strongly recommended, especially on weekends and during popular events. The gardens are about 30 miles from Wilmington, Delaware and roughly an hour from Philadelphia.

Whether you're a serious horticulture enthusiast or simply looking for a peaceful day surrounded by extraordinary beauty, Longwood Gardens delivers an experience that's hard to match anywhere on the East Coast. It's a place that rewards slow exploration - take your time, sit on a bench by the fountains, and let the scenery work its magic.

Accessibility

Longwood Gardens is widely recognized as very accessible for visitors with mobility challenges. Almost all garden areas are wheelchair accessible, with paved paths throughout the grounds that are generally easy to roll on. The Conservatory, Visitor Center, restaurants, gift shops, and restrooms are all accessible. Wheelchair-accessible restrooms are available in the main atrium area and at other locations around the property.

Visitors are welcome and encouraged to bring their own personal mobility devices. Wheelchairs are also available for use at the gardens - check with Guest Services upon arrival for availability.

There are some limitations to be aware of. The Chimes Tower and portions of the Peirce-du Pont House are not wheelchair accessible. Some outdoor garden paths, particularly in more naturalized areas, may be uneven or have grades that could be challenging.

Parking is available near the Visitor Center entrance. The property is large, so visitors with limited endurance should plan their route and consider focusing on the indoor Conservatory and nearby outdoor gardens first, as these are closest to the entrance.

For the most current information about specific accessibility accommodations, including any assistive listening devices for events, sensory-friendly programs, or service animal policies, contact Longwood Gardens directly before your visit. Staff members have been consistently described as helpful and accommodating by visitors with disabilities.
