About
Biltmore Estate is the largest privately owned home in the United States, a 250-room French Renaissance chateau built by George Vanderbilt in the 1890s. Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains near Asheville, North Carolina, it's a place where Gilded Age grandeur meets the natural beauty of the Southern Appalachians.
The house itself is breathtaking. You'll walk through richly furnished rooms, a 10,000-volume library, an indoor swimming pool, and a bowling alley that was cutting-edge entertainment in its day. The architecture draws from European castles Vanderbilt visited during his travels, and every detail reflects the craftsmanship of a bygone era.
Beyond the house, the estate's 8,000 acres offer plenty to explore. Frederick Law Olmsted, the designer of Central Park, created the grounds and gardens. The formal gardens bloom with seasonal color, from tulips in spring to chrysanthemums in fall. Miles of paths wind through manicured landscapes and wooded areas.
Biltmore also features a working winery in a converted dairy barn, where you can sample estate-grown wines. Antler Hill Village offers dining, shopping, and exhibits about the estate's history and farming heritage. There's easily a full day's worth of activities here, and many visitors find they want to come back.
Plan to arrive early, especially during peak seasons like fall foliage and the Christmas candlelight evenings. Tickets are more affordable when purchased in advance online. The estate is open year-round, and each season brings something different to enjoy.
Accessibility
Biltmore Estate provides several accessibility features for visitors with mobility needs. All Biltmore Estate shuttles are accessible to wheelchair and stroller users, offering transportation between key areas of the property. Park and Ride Lot E has designated accessible parking spaces with round-trip ADA shuttle service to Biltmore House.
Inside the house, visitors with limited mobility can access the first and second floors. The third floor and basement are not wheelchair accessible, but the estate provides a rest area with video footage of those areas so visitors don't miss out on the experience. This is a thoughtful accommodation, though it's worth knowing about before your visit.
The grounds include some wheelchair-friendly trails. The large paved parking lot off Approach Road has several designated accessible spaces, all van-accessible with striped access aisles. Some garden paths are paved and manageable, though the estate covers hilly terrain and not all outdoor areas will be equally accessible.
For the most current information on specific accommodations, including sensory accessibility options, restroom accessibility, and any recent improvements, contact the Reception and Ticketing Sales Center directly before your visit. Staff can help you plan a route through the house and grounds that works best for your needs.
