About

Biltmore is a place that defies expectation. Built by George Vanderbilt in the 1890s, this 250-room French Renaissance chateau sits among the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina. It remains the largest privately owned home in the United States, and walking through its rooms feels like stepping into a different era entirely.

The house itself is only part of the story. Biltmore's grounds span roughly 8,000 acres and include some of the most beautiful designed landscapes in the country. Frederick Law Olmsted, the visionary behind Central Park, created the estate's gardens and surrounding parkland. Today, visitors can explore formal gardens bursting with seasonal color, a conservatory filled with tropical plants, and miles of paths winding through forests and meadows.

Beyond the house and gardens, the estate offers a working winery with tastings, a farmyard area popular with families, outdoor activities like biking and horseback riding, and several restaurants and shops in Antler Hill Village. There's genuinely enough here to fill an entire day, and many visitors find themselves wishing they'd planned for two.

Biltmore sits just minutes from downtown Asheville, a city known for its vibrant arts scene, craft breweries, and farm-to-table dining. The combination makes for an ideal trip, whether you're visiting for a weekend or a full week. Seasonal events, from spring blooms to Christmas candlelight tours, give the estate a different character throughout the year.

Plan to arrive early. The estate is large, and giving yourself time to explore at a relaxed pace makes all the difference. Tickets are best purchased in advance online, and visiting on weekdays tends to mean smaller crowds.

Accessibility

Biltmore offers several accommodations for guests with disabilities. ADA-accessible parking spaces are provided in the majority of estate parking lots for guests with mobility disabilities and state-issued parking permits. Park & Ride Lot E offers accessible parking with round-trip ADA shuttle service to Biltmore House, and all Biltmore Estate shuttles are accessible to wheelchair and stroller users.

The gardens and grounds include paved pathways, though some areas involve slopes and uneven terrain typical of a mountainside estate. Several designated accessible spaces are available in the large paved parking lot off Approach Road, and all of them are van-accessible with striped access aisles.

Biltmore House itself has limited accessibility due to its historic architecture. Many areas involve stairs, narrow passages, and thresholds that can be difficult for wheelchair users. In recognition of this, Biltmore offers a reduced-price admission ticket for guests with disabilities, available at the Reception & Ticketing Sales Center.

For the most current details on specific accommodations, including sensory resources, companion animal policies, and restroom accessibility, contact Biltmore's guest services directly before your visit. Staff can help you plan a route through the estate that works best for your needs.
