About
WaterFire Providence is one of America's most captivating public art experiences. Created by artist Barnaby Evans, this award-winning installation features nearly 100 bonfires that blaze just above the surface of three rivers running through downtown Providence. The fires are lit at sunset during scheduled events from late spring through early fall, transforming the city into something truly magical.
As darkness falls, the scent of aromatic wood smoke fills the air while music drifts across the water. Thousands of visitors stroll along the riverwalks, pausing at bridges and gathering spots to take in the glow. Street performers, food vendors, and local artists add to the atmosphere, making each lighting a community celebration that feels both intimate and grand.
The experience stretches across roughly a mile of downtown Providence, winding past historic buildings, parks, and public spaces. You can follow the river at your own pace, stopping wherever the view catches your eye. Some visitors spend an hour, others make an entire evening of it, combining the walk with dinner at one of the many restaurants along the route.
WaterFire events are free and open to the public, though the organization welcomes donations. Full lightings typically begin around sunset and last several hours. Partial lightings cover a shorter stretch of river. Check the official WaterFire Providence website for the current season's schedule, as dates vary each year.
Beyond the signature fire installations, WaterFire Providence also operates the WaterFire Arts Center, a year-round venue hosting exhibitions, performances, and community events in a beautifully converted industrial space. Together, these offerings make Providence a standout cultural destination in New England.
Accessibility
WaterFire Providence has made a strong commitment to inclusive access. The walkways along the rivers have been designed and built to be ADA-compliant, allowing wheelchair users and visitors with mobility aids to enjoy the full route. Specially designed accessible viewing zones are positioned along the installation so everyone can experience the fires up close.
One of the most notable programs is WaterFire's accessible water-taxi service, which offers rides on the river for children and adults with disabilities or mobility difficulties. This program provides an unforgettable perspective of the artwork from the water itself, a unique experience that few public art installations offer anywhere in the country.
The WaterFire Arts Center is fully ADA compliant, with two designated handicap parking spaces available on site. The indoor venue is accessible for exhibitions, performances, and other events held throughout the year.
It's worth noting that while the outdoor walkways are accessible by design, crowded conditions during popular full lightings can present challenges for wheelchair users or those with mobility devices. Arriving earlier in the evening, before peak crowds, can make for a more comfortable experience. Lighting conditions also change as the event progresses, so visitors with low vision should plan accordingly.
