About
Vizcaya Museum and Gardens is one of Miami's signature historic places, preserving James Deering's 1916 winter estate on Biscayne Bay. Visitors can explore the Main House, formal gardens, waterfront views, museum collections, self-guided experiences, seasonal tours, and cultural programs. The estate blends Italian-inspired architecture, subtropical planting, decorative arts, and Miami history in a setting that feels more like a preserved world than a conventional museum. Because Vizcaya is a National Historic Landmark, the visit also comes with practical realities: older rooms, terraces, steps, gravel and dirt garden paths, and areas where preservation limits access. It is a strong destination for travelers who want history, architecture, gardens, and photography, but it rewards advance planning, especially for visitors with mobility needs.
Accessibility
Vizcaya has several important accessibility supports. Accessible parking is available in the main parking lot and in the service area on the south side of the Main House, and security staff can help direct visitors who need drop-off near the wheelchair lift. Wheelchairs are loaned first-come, first-served.
Main House access is mixed because this is a preserved historic estate. The first floor is mostly wheelchair accessible through the ramp and lift on the south side, with assistance from security, but the Entrance Loggia and East Loggia are exceptions. The second floor is not wheelchair accessible. An interactive Virtual Access Tour on the first floor offers virtual access to the second floor, tower rooms, and non-accessible garden areas.
Garden access is also mixed. Central portions of the formal gardens are accessible, but paths are primarily dirt and gravel rather than paved. The Garden Mound, Maze Garden, Theater Garden, Tea House, Boat Landing, Secret Garden, and west statuary walk have limited or no access.
Fully accessible restrooms are located on the south side of the Main House and at Oval Plaza near the Garden Mound. Sign Language interpreters are available for guided Main House tours with at least five working days' advance notice. Service animals are permitted under ADA guidelines. Visitors unable to climb about 20 steps or walk about 750 feet should contact Vizcaya before visiting or speak with Admissions on arrival for route guidance.
