About

Slide Rock State Park sits in the heart of Oak Creek Canyon, just north of Sedona along scenic State Route 89A. The centerpiece is a natural water slide formed by centuries of water flowing over smooth red sandstone, creating a slippery chute that carries swimmers downstream through crystal-clear creek water. It is one of the most iconic swimming holes in Arizona and draws visitors from around the world.

The park covers 43 acres of what was once the Pendley Homestead, an apple orchard established in 1912. Many of the original apple trees still produce fruit, and visitors can explore the historic orchard and homestead buildings. During autumn, the surrounding canyon erupts in golden and crimson foliage, making it a popular destination for leaf-peeping as well as swimming.

The main attraction is the natural rock slide along Oak Creek, where visitors can wade, swim, and slide down the smooth red rock formations. The water is cold even in summer, which makes it a refreshing escape from the Arizona heat. Beyond the slide area, the park offers opportunities for wading, fishing, and wildlife viewing. The canyon walls rise dramatically on either side, creating a stunning backdrop of layered red and tan sandstone.

The drive to the park is an experience in itself. State Route 89A winds through Oak Creek Canyon with towering rock walls, dense forest, and sweeping views around every curve. Many visitors consider it one of the most beautiful drives in the state.

The park can get very crowded during summer weekends, and the parking lot often fills by mid-morning. Arriving early is strongly recommended, especially between May and September. There are picnic areas, restrooms, and a small visitor area near the entrance. An entrance fee is required per vehicle.

Accessibility

Accessibility at Slide Rock State Park is limited due to the rugged natural terrain. The creek and natural rock slide area are not wheelchair accessible, as reaching the water requires navigating steep, uneven rock surfaces and natural stone steps. Visitors with mobility challenges should be aware that the primary attractions involve traversing rough, slippery rock formations.

The parking area and some portions of the upper park grounds near the entrance and picnic areas are on relatively level terrain. Accessible parking spaces and accessible restrooms are available near the main facilities, consistent with Arizona State Parks standards.

The scenic drive through Oak Creek Canyon along State Route 89A offers beautiful views that can be enjoyed from a vehicle, and some pullout overlooks along the route provide views without requiring extensive walking.

Visitors with mobility considerations may still enjoy the upper portions of the park, including views of the canyon and the historic orchard area, though paved accessible pathways to all areas are not guaranteed. The terrain throughout much of the park is natural and unimproved.

Contact Slide Rock State Park directly at (928) 282-3034 or visit the Arizona State Parks website for current accessibility details, including information about any recent improvements or accommodations that may be available. Staff can provide guidance on which areas of the park are most accessible for visitors with specific needs.
