About
Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area sits just 17 miles west of the Las Vegas Strip, offering a dramatic contrast to the neon lights of the city. Towering red and cream-colored sandstone formations rise from the Mojave Desert floor, some reaching over 3,000 feet high. The area spans nearly 200,000 acres of protected desert wilderness.
The 13-mile Scenic Drive is the centerpiece of any visit. This one-way loop road winds through the canyon with pullouts at major viewpoints, letting you take in the geology at your own pace from the comfort of your vehicle. Interpretive signs at each stop explain the forces that shaped these ancient rocks over 600 million years.
The visitor center is a great place to start your trip. You'll find exhibits on the area's geology, wildlife, and the Native American peoples who've called this place home for thousands of years. Rangers are on hand to answer questions and help you plan your time based on your interests and abilities.
Beyond the drive, Red Rock Canyon offers picnic areas, a campground, and trails ranging from easy walks to challenging scrambles. The Willow Springs Picnic Area is a popular spot to relax among the rocks, and several shorter trails provide gentle paths through the desert environment. Spring wildflower season and fall's cooler temperatures are especially pleasant times to visit.
The campground provides a way to extend your stay under some of the darkest skies near any major city. Whether you're here for a quick afternoon drive or a multi-day camping trip, Red Rock Canyon delivers an unforgettable desert experience that's surprisingly close to civilization.
Accessibility
Red Rock Canyon can be enjoyed at all activity and mobility levels. The 13-mile Scenic Drive is fully paved, and most pullout viewpoints along the route are accessible. This means you can experience the canyon's most impressive views without leaving your vehicle or by making short stops at paved overlooks.
Several wheelchair-accessible trails are available, including paths at the Willow Springs Picnic Area, near the visitor center, and at the scenic overlook. These trails offer smooth surfaces suitable for wheelchair users and those with mobility aids. The visitor center itself is accessible and features restrooms that meet accessibility standards.
Accessible restrooms are located at the visitor center and at most pullouts along the Scenic Drive. The campground includes three fully accessible campsites with concrete-surfaced parking spots, making overnight stays possible for visitors who use wheelchairs or other mobility devices.
There are four designated accessible parking spaces available at key locations throughout the conservation area. The parking areas connect to paved pathways leading to viewpoints and facilities.
For the most current information on trail conditions and accessibility features, contact the Bureau of Land Management's Red Rock Canyon office or stop by the visitor center when you arrive. Staff can recommend the best routes and areas based on your specific needs.
