About

Rainbow Row is one of Charleston's most photographed landmarks, a stunning collection of 13 pastel-colored Georgian row houses lining East Bay Street. Built in the 1740s, these homes represent the longest cluster of Georgian row houses in the United States. Their candy-colored facades in shades of pink, blue, yellow, and coral have become a symbol of Charleston's charm and historic beauty.

The houses stretch along a single block between Tradd Street and Elliott Street, making it a compact and enjoyable walk. Visitors come from around the world to admire the architecture, snap photos, and soak in the atmosphere of one of America's most beloved streetscapes. The sidewalk runs directly in front of the homes, giving you an up-close look at the detailed ironwork, window boxes overflowing with flowers, and the distinctive color palette that gives the row its name.

Rainbow Row sits in the heart of Charleston's historic district, just a short walk from Waterfront Park and the city's famous Battery promenade. You can easily combine a visit here with a broader exploration of the neighborhood's cobblestone streets, hidden gardens, and historic churches. Nearby restaurants and cafes make it simple to plan a full morning or afternoon in the area.

There's no admission fee to enjoy Rainbow Row since it's a public street. The homes are privately owned residences, so you'll be viewing them from the sidewalk and street. Early morning visits are ideal for the best light and fewer crowds. Spring is particularly beautiful when the window boxes and nearby gardens are in full bloom.

Whether you're a history enthusiast, a photography lover, or simply someone who appreciates a beautiful streetscape, Rainbow Row delivers a memorable experience in just a short visit.

Accessibility

Rainbow Row is a public sidewalk experience along East Bay Street, and the street itself is flat and paved. The sidewalk in front of the row houses is generally smooth, making it passable for wheelchair users and those with mobility aids. However, like much of Charleston's historic district, some sections of nearby sidewalks may be uneven due to age, tree roots, or transitions between surfaces.

Waterfront Park, located just a block away, is noted for its smooth pathways and easy wheelchair access. This makes it a natural companion stop when visiting Rainbow Row. The park offers harbor views, benches, and the iconic Pineapple Fountain along accessible paths.

Parking in the historic district can be limited. Street parking and nearby garages are available, though accessible spaces fill quickly during peak tourist season. The closest public garage options are along Concord Street and near the Charleston City Market area.

Because Rainbow Row is an outdoor streetscape rather than a facility, there are no on-site restrooms or visitor services. Nearby restaurants and Waterfront Park offer the closest restroom options. The experience is primarily visual, making it naturally enjoyable for visitors with hearing impairments.

Contact the City of Charleston Visitor Center at (843) 724-7474 for current accessibility details about sidewalk conditions, nearby accessible parking, and restroom locations in the historic district.
