About

Prophetstown State Park sits where the Tippecanoe River meets the Wabash, just north of Lafayette in west-central Indiana. It's the state's newest state park, and it offers something rare - a chance to experience what Indiana looked like before European settlement, with restored tallgrass prairie stretching across rolling terrain shaped by ancient glaciers.

The park covers over 3,000 acres of prairie, wetlands, and wooded areas. Visitors can walk through waist-high prairie grasses, watch for birds along well-maintained trails, and enjoy peaceful river views. The visitor center houses live animal exhibits and interpretive displays that bring the region's natural and cultural history to life.

Families will find plenty to do here. Several picnic areas are scattered throughout the park, each with its own playground. Four shelter houses can be reserved for group gatherings. The modern campground offers 110 sites with electric hookups, making it easy to extend your visit overnight or for a long weekend.

Birdwatchers particularly love Prophetstown. The park sits along the Indiana Birding Trail, and benches are placed at regular intervals along paths so you can sit and watch. Prairie birds, waterfowl, and woodland species all call the park home at various times of year.

Nearby attractions add depth to any trip. The Tippecanoe Battlefield Museum is just two miles away, telling the story of the famous 1811 battle. Wolf Park, about five miles from the park, offers a unique chance to observe wolves, bison, and other animals up close. Celery Bog and Lily Nature Center are seven miles out and provide additional birding and nature experiences.

The park received significant investment through a $1 million Lilly Endowment grant that funded accessibility improvements, campground upgrades, playground replacements, and historic structure repairs. This commitment shows in the quality of facilities throughout the park.

Whether you're coming for a quiet morning walk through the prairie, a weekend of camping, or a day of birdwatching, Prophetstown delivers an authentic Indiana experience in a welcoming setting.

Accessibility

Prophetstown State Park has received substantial accessibility investments. The park benefited from a major Lilly Endowment grant that funded trail wheelchairs and other accessibility improvements across Indiana's state park system.

The campground's 110 modern sites are all ADA accessible. Several picnic areas, shelter houses, and playgrounds throughout the park are also ADA accessible, with each picnic area featuring its own accessible playground.

The visitor center is wheelchair accessible, offering live animal exhibits and interpretive displays that all visitors can enjoy. Benches are placed at regular intervals along birding paths, providing rest spots for visitors who need frequent breaks.

Indiana's Department of Natural Resources has made trail wheelchairs available at state parks, including Prophetstown, as part of their accessibility program. These can make it possible to experience the park's prairie trails and river views even with mobility challenges.

The DNR has also implemented fishing access improvements, special hunting permits for visitors with medical needs, and wildlife viewing enhancements across their properties.
