About

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore stretches 42 miles along Lake Superior's southern shore in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, showcasing some of the most dramatic geology in the Midwest. Towering sandstone cliffs rise up to 200 feet above the lake, painted in vivid bands of red, orange, white, and green by centuries of mineral-rich groundwater seeping through the rock. It's a place where raw natural beauty meets the largest freshwater lake in the world.

Visitors come for the cliffs, but they stay for everything else. Waterfalls tumble through forested ravines. Sandy beaches stretch along crystal-clear coves. In winter, the cliffs transform into massive ice curtains that draw photographers from around the country. The park offers hiking, kayaking, camping, and some of the best scenic drives in the Great Lakes region.

The town of Munising serves as the main gateway to the park and is where you'll find most visitor services, including restaurants, lodging, and outfitters offering boat tours along the cliffs. These cruises are one of the most popular ways to experience Pictured Rocks, giving you a water-level perspective of the towering formations that you simply can't get from above.

For a shorter visit, the Munising Falls area makes an excellent starting point. An 800-foot paved walkway leads to an observation deck at the base of the falls, offering a rewarding experience without a strenuous hike. Miners Castle, another signature landmark, provides overlook platforms with views of the cliffs and Lake Superior.

The park is open year-round, though many facilities operate seasonally from late May through mid-October. Summer brings the warmest weather and longest days, but fall color season in September and October is spectacular. Winter visitors can enjoy cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, plus the chance to see the famous ice formations.

Whether you're planning a day trip from Munising or a week-long backcountry adventure, Pictured Rocks rewards visitors with scenery that rivals any national park in the country.

Accessibility

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore has made meaningful efforts to bring its rugged terrain within reach of visitors with disabilities. The Munising Falls Trail features an 800-foot paved, ADA-accessible walkway leading to an observation deck at the base of the waterfall (note: check current status, as the trail has experienced temporary closures due to washout). This is the park's most accessible trail experience.

The park provides a beach wheelchair for visitors who need mobility assistance to access the shoreline. This allows visitors to reach the sand and water at the park's iconic beaches. Contact the Munising Falls Visitor Center at 906-387-3700 for availability and to arrange use of the beach wheelchair.

Some trails may be passable with all-terrain tires or adaptive and motorized mobility equipment, though surfaces and grades vary significantly across the park's trail system. Many backcountry trails involve steep, uneven terrain that presents significant barriers for wheelchair users.

The Munising Falls Visitor Center serves as the primary information hub and can provide current details on accessible facilities, trail conditions, and available accommodations. Accessible restroom facilities are available at developed areas within the park.

For visitors who prefer not to hike, the Pictured Rocks boat cruises departing from Munising offer cliff views from the water. Contact the tour operators directly to confirm boarding accessibility and any accommodations they provide.

Contact the park directly at 906-387-3700 or visit the Munising Falls Visitor Center for the most current accessibility information, including seasonal changes to facility availability and trail conditions.
