About
Philadelphia Zoo holds a remarkable distinction as the first zoo in the United States, opening its gates in 1874. Today it's home to more than 1,300 animals representing over 300 species, spread across 42 acres of lush grounds in West Philadelphia's Fairmount Park. From rare big cats to playful primates, the zoo offers an immersive wildlife experience that's been welcoming families for over 150 years.
One of the zoo's standout features is Zoo360, an innovative trail system of see-through mesh tunnels that allow animals to travel above and around visitors. Watch lemurs, gorillas, and big cats move overhead as they explore extensions of their habitats. It's a one-of-a-kind experience that puts you closer to the animals than a traditional zoo visit.
The zoo is organized into distinct themed areas. KidZooU is an interactive children's zoo where young visitors can meet goats, cows, and other domestic animals. The McNeil Avian Center houses tropical birds in a stunning free-flight exhibit. Big Cat Falls features lions, tigers, jaguars, and other large predators in naturalistic habitats with excellent viewing areas.
Seasonal events add variety throughout the year. LumiNature transforms the zoo into a dazzling light display during the winter months, and summer brings extended evening hours and special programming. The zoo also hosts sensory-friendly events designed for families with children who have special needs.
Planning your visit is straightforward. The zoo is open year-round, with seasonal hours that vary. On-site parking is available in the Tiger Lot and a parking garage. Several dining options and gift shops are located throughout the grounds, making it easy to spend a full day exploring.
Accessibility
Philadelphia Zoo has been certified as a wheelchair-accessible attraction and is widely regarded as fully accessible to visitors with mobility challenges. The zoo's paved pathways allow wheelchair and ECV access to virtually every exhibit. Visitor reviews confirm that motorized scooters and wheelchairs can enter all exhibits, with the possible exception of the petting zoo area.
Mobility device rentals are available on-site, including double strollers ($12) and wagons ($15). The zoo provides a Mobility Map to help visitors plan accessible routes through the grounds. Handicapped-accessible parking spots, including spaces for vans, are available in both the Tiger Lot and the parking garage. Parking can be pre-paid online or purchased at self-service kiosks inside the zoo entrance.
Service animals are welcome throughout the zoo. A dedicated Service Animal Map is available to help handlers identify the best routes and any areas with restrictions. The zoo recommends reviewing this map before your visit to plan accordingly.
The zoo hosts sensory-friendly events specifically designed for families of children with special needs. These events typically feature reduced crowds, lower noise levels, and adjusted lighting to create a more comfortable environment. Contact the zoo directly for upcoming event dates and details.
For the most current information on accessibility features, wheelchair rentals, and sensory-friendly programming, visit the zoo's accessibility page or call ahead before your visit. Staff members are available to help with specific accommodation questions and to arrange specialized tours when needed.
