About
North Cascades National Park Service Complex protects rugged mountains, forests, lakes, rivers, and the State Route 20 corridor in northern Washington. Visitors use the area for scenic driving, visitor centers, short walks, camping, picnicking, viewpoints, wilderness information, and route planning into a dramatic alpine landscape. The official National Park Service accessibility page is helpful because it names specific buildings, trails, restrooms, campgrounds, and picnic locations.
NPS states that accessible restrooms are available at all visitor information stations and most campgrounds. The North Cascades Visitor Center, Sedro-Woolley information station, and Wilderness Information Center are fully accessible. The Golden West Visitor Center has a more difficult unpaved, sloping approach that may be negotiated with assistance, but it has a ramp into the center and an elevator inside.
Several short routes are identified as accessible. Sterling Munro Trail at the North Cascades Visitor Center and Happy Creek Forest Walk at milepost 135 on State Route 20 are fully accessible boardwalk paths. Happy Creek is a one-third-mile loop through ancient forest. River Loop Trail near the campground section, Linking Trail, and Newhalem Creek Rockshelter Trail near the visitor center are described as accessible trails with good surfaces and less than 10 percent grade throughout.
East of Newhalem, NPS says the Gorge Overlook Trail is partially paved. Accessible campsites and restrooms are available in park campgrounds, and accessible picnic shelters are available at Newhalem and Goodell Creek Campgrounds. Because the broader park is mountainous and remote, visitors should still check current trail, road, weather, and seasonal facility conditions before relying on a specific accessible route.
