About
The National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium is a major Dubuque attraction focused on the Mississippi River, inland waterways, river ecology, history, culture, and conservation. The main campus includes multiple buildings, aquariums, animal habitats, exhibits, a 4D theater, historic river-related experiences, outdoor areas, and connections to the Mathias Ham Historic Site. Visitors can learn about river animals, river commerce, conservation, regional history, and the relationship between communities and waterways. General admission is structured to support a broad visit, and the museum's campus layout means guests may move between buildings and outdoor spaces during their day. It is a strong Accessible America addition because the museum publishes unusually detailed accessibility guidance covering parking, entrances, elevators, wheelchairs, restrooms, sensory tools, service animals, and route limitations.
Accessibility
The River Museum publishes a detailed accessibility page. Parking is free, and all buildings on the main campus and at the Mathias Ham Site have designated parking spaces for disabled parking permit holders. Main campus entry areas include temporary pull-up spaces near entry doors with automatic door push plates.
The main campus includes two distinct buildings about one-eighth of a mile apart. Both main buildings have stairs with handrails and elevators between floors, and the route between them includes boardwalk and paved sidewalk areas that are partly exposed to weather. Some outdoor activity areas are accessible only over gravel and grass near the waterline. The dredge boat includes a lift elevator between the main and second deck, while the historic Mathias Ham home has only the main floor accessible without stairs.
A limited number of wheelchairs are available to borrow on a first-come, first-served basis from the box offices. Family and companion restrooms are available on campus. The Comfort Room provides a private quieter space with a reclining chair, electrical outlets, headphones, a sink, and fidgets.
The museum is KultureCity certified and offers sensory-friendly tools, a social story, and quieter-time guidance. Service animals and service animals in training are allowed under state and federal requirements. The 4D theater has listening devices, designated wheelchair seating, companion chairs, and frequent special effects that may include water mist, rumbling seats, wind, fog, and strobe lights.
