About

Monterey and Carmel-by-the-Sea sit a few miles apart on the Monterey Peninsula, forming one of California's most rewarding paired destinations. Monterey is a historic port city made famous by John Steinbeck's Cannery Row, while Carmel is an impossibly picturesque village of cottages, galleries, and fine restaurants clustered above a white-sand beach.

Monterey Bay Aquarium is the region's undisputed crown jewel. Sitting directly on the bay at the end of Cannery Row, it houses some of the most impressive marine exhibits in the world, including a massive kelp forest tank and a deep-sea exploration zone. The aquarium is fully accessible throughout, offering complimentary manual wheelchairs and bariatric wheelchairs, sensory bags, and noise-reduction headphones. Service animals are welcome.

Cannery Row, the historic sardine-canning strip immortalized by Steinbeck, is now a pedestrian-friendly zone of restaurants, shops, and wine bars. It connects to the Monterey Bay Coastal Recreation Trail - an 18-mile paved path running along the coast from Pacific Grove to Castroville, with ocean views throughout. This trail is one of the most accessible and scenic cycling/walking paths in California.

Fisherman's Wharf in Monterey, separate from San Francisco's, has numerous wheelchair-accessible restaurants and shops along the waterfront. Whale watching boats typically depart from here; confirm boat-specific accessibility when booking.

Carmel-by-the-Sea is walkable and charming with galleries, boutiques, and excellent restaurants on Ocean Avenue and its cross streets. Carmel Beach, reached at the end of Ocean Avenue, has a wheelchair-accessible boardwalk and lookout area. Carmel Mission is also wheelchair accessible, with wheelchairs available on request at the museum store.

The Monarch Grove Butterfly Sanctuary in Pacific Grove, active November through January, is ADA accessible with accessible parking and restrooms.
