About

Millennium Park sits at the heart of downtown Chicago, a 24.5-acre public space that's become one of the most visited destinations in the Midwest. Since opening in 2004, it's drawn millions of visitors each year to experience a remarkable collection of art, architecture, music, and green space right along the Lake Michigan shoreline.

The park's centerpiece is Cloud Gate, the massive reflective sculpture affectionately known as "The Bean." Visitors gather around it to take photos, watch the Chicago skyline warp across its mirrored surface, and simply enjoy the spectacle. Nearby, Crown Fountain features two 50-foot glass block towers that project video images of Chicago residents while water cascades down their surfaces. Kids and adults alike cool off in the shallow reflecting pool between them during warmer months.

The Jay Pritzker Pavilion, designed by Frank Gehry, hosts free concerts and events throughout the summer season. Its dramatic stainless steel framework frames one of the finest outdoor music venues in the country. The Great Lawn stretching before it accommodates thousands of visitors for everything from classical music performances to movie screenings.

Lurie Garden offers a quieter experience. This 5-acre garden features native plantings that change with the seasons, creating a peaceful retreat from the surrounding urban energy. Walking paths wind through perennial beds, past a shallow water feature, and under light-filtering tree canopies.

The park connects to Maggie Daley Park via the BP Pedestrian Bridge, another Gehry design that snakes over Columbus Drive. From there, visitors can access climbing walls, a skating ribbon, and expansive play areas.

Millennium Park is free and open daily from 6 AM to 11 PM. It's easily reached by CTA bus and train lines, with the closest L stops at Washington/Wabash and Monroe. Metra trains stop at the nearby Millennium Station. Several parking garages sit directly beneath the park. Dining options range from the upscale Park Grill to seasonal cafes scattered throughout the grounds.

Accessibility

Millennium Park was designed from the ground up with accessibility as a core principle. Every aspect of the physical space has been built for full inclusion, making it one of the most thoroughly accessible public parks in the country.

All park entrances and walkways are paved and wheelchair-friendly, with smooth surfaces throughout. The Millennium Park Welcome Center at 201 E. Randolph Street offers wheelchair loans for visitors who need them. Wheelchair-accessible seating is available throughout the Jay Pritzker Pavilion Seating Bowl for concerts and events.

The park sits above underground parking garages accessible from Michigan Avenue and Columbus Drive. Street-level access points are step-free. CTA stations nearby provide elevator access, and Millennium Station (Metra) connects directly to the park level.

For events at the Pritzker Pavilion, assistive listening devices are available and should be returned to any front-of-house usher or security guard by the end of the event or before park closure. Accessible restrooms are located at multiple points throughout the park, including at the Welcome Center.

The park's flat terrain and wide paved paths make it comfortable for wheelchair users, people with strollers, and those with limited mobility. Lurie Garden's walkways are similarly accessible, with gentle grades and firm surfaces. The BP Pedestrian Bridge includes gradual ramps rather than stairs.

Park staff and security personnel are available throughout the grounds to assist visitors. For specific accommodation needs or to confirm current accessibility features, contact the Millennium Park Welcome Center before your visit.
