About

Standing in the heart of downtown Honolulu, 'Iolani Palace is the only official royal residence in the United States. Built in 1882 by King David Kalakaua, this National Historic Landmark served as the seat of the Hawaiian Kingdom's government and witnessed some of the most dramatic moments in Hawaii's history, including the overthrow of Queen Lili'uokalani in 1893.

Today, the palace welcomes visitors to explore its beautifully restored rooms, where original furnishings, royal portraits, and crown jewels tell the story of Hawaii's monarchs. The first floor features the grand Throne Room and State Dining Room, while the second floor holds the private chambers of the king and queen. Every detail, from the palace's electric lighting (installed before the White House had it) to the elaborate koa wood staircase, reflects the sophistication of the Hawaiian Kingdom.

Visitors can choose between guided docent tours or self-guided audio tours. The audio tour lets you move at your own pace, which many visitors prefer. Everyone receives protective booties to wear over their shoes, helping preserve the original hardwood floors.

The palace grounds themselves are worth exploring. Mature banyan trees shade the lawns, and the Coronation Pavilion and 'Iolani Barracks (now the palace gift shop and ticket office) round out the experience. The Barracks building houses fascinating exhibits about palace history and restoration efforts.

Nearby, Hawaii's Plantation Village in Waipahu offers a different window into the islands' past. This outdoor museum recreates life on a sugar plantation, with restored homes representing the diverse cultures that shaped modern Hawaii, from Japanese and Filipino to Portuguese and Korean communities.

Both sites pair well with other Honolulu attractions. The Hawaii State Capitol, King Kamehameha statue, and Kawaiaha'o Church are all within walking distance of the palace. Plan about 90 minutes for a palace visit and another hour or two for Plantation Village.

Accessibility

All public areas of 'Iolani Palace and 'Iolani Barracks are wheelchair accessible. The first floor is fully accessible to wheelchair users, and an elevator provides access to the second floor for all visitors (the historic staircase is off-limits to everyone, so all guests use the elevator). A custom inclined platform lift was installed in 2016 to provide access to the basement level for visitors with mobility disabilities.

The palace keeps a limited supply of standardized wheelchairs available for visitors who need them inside the building. However, motorized scooters and electric wheelchairs are not permitted inside the palace itself due to the historic floors and narrow doorways. If you rely on a power chair, contact the palace ahead of your visit to discuss arrangements.

The palace grounds are mostly flat with paved pathways. Self-guided audio tours allow visitors to move through the palace at their own pace, which can be helpful for those who need extra time or want to take breaks.

For Hawaii's Plantation Village, the outdoor museum setting includes walkways between restored buildings. Contact the village directly for current details about pathway surfaces and building accessibility, as conditions may vary between structures.

Parking is available near the palace in the downtown Honolulu area. Contact 'Iolani Palace at (808) 522-0822 for specific questions about accessible parking, restroom facilities, and any sensory accommodations that may be available. Visiting during weekday mornings typically means smaller crowds, which can make the experience more comfortable for visitors with sensory sensitivities.
