About
Adeline Jay Geo-Karis Illinois Beach State Park stretches along 6.5 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline, making it the only remaining beach ridge shoreline left in Illinois. Located in Zion, about an hour north of Chicago, this park offers a rare combination of sandy beaches, rolling dunes, wetlands, and prairie grasses that feel worlds away from the city.
The park is divided into two units. The South Unit is the more developed area, with a resort and conference center, swimming beach, picnic shelters, and camping facilities. The North Unit offers a quieter, more natural experience with trails winding through dune and swale habitat that supports over 650 plant species, including several that are threatened or endangered.
Fishing is a popular draw here. You can cast a line along the beach in both units (outside the designated swimming areas) or try your luck at several small inland ponds, including Sand Pond. A valid Illinois fishing license is required.
Beyond the beach, the park's trail system takes visitors through diverse ecosystems. Birdwatchers will find plenty to appreciate, as the lakefront location sits along a major migratory flyway. Spring and fall bring waves of warblers, shorebirds, and raptors through the area.
Picnicking is easy and enjoyable, with shelters and tables available in the South Unit. The park's proximity to Lake Michigan means cool breezes even on warm summer days, making it a comfortable spot for a family outing.
The resort lodge offers year-round accommodations if you'd like to extend your visit. Winter brings its own beauty, with cross-country skiing and snowshoeing available when conditions allow.
Whether you're looking for a beach day, a nature walk through rare habitats, or a quiet afternoon of fishing, Illinois Beach State Park delivers an accessible outdoor experience that's surprisingly close to the Chicago metro area.
Accessibility
Illinois Beach State Park includes several specific accessibility features, particularly in the South Unit. An accessible fishing pier is located at Sand Pond, providing wheelchair users with the opportunity to fish without navigating uneven shoreline terrain. A sidewalk connects the parking lot to the South Unit shelter, which is equipped with two wheelchair-accessible picnic tables, a water jug filler, and a water fountain.
The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) has an ongoing commitment to improving access for people with disabilities across its parks, including making hunting, fishing, and outdoor recreation more inclusive.
The South Unit's developed areas, including the resort and conference center, generally offer paved surfaces and easier mobility than the North Unit, which features more natural terrain and trails that may present challenges for wheelchair users or those with limited mobility.
Beach access can vary with conditions. Sandy surfaces near the waterline may be difficult for wheelchairs or mobility devices. Contact the park directly at (847) 662-4811 for current information about beach wheelchair availability or any seasonal accessibility accommodations.
For the most up-to-date details on accessible restrooms, campsite accommodations, trail surface conditions, and any recent improvements, contact the park office or visit the IDNR website. Conditions can change seasonally, so calling ahead before your visit is recommended, especially if you have specific mobility or sensory accommodation needs.
