About

The Harbour Town Lighthouse & Museum stands as one of the most recognizable landmarks on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. Built in 1970, this distinctive red-and-white-striped tower rises 90 feet above the Sea Pines Resort marina and has become a beloved symbol of the Lowcountry. Unlike historic coastal lighthouses, Harbour Town was designed from the start as both a working navigational aid and a cultural attraction.

Inside the lighthouse, 144 steps wind upward through a series of exhibit landings that tell the story of Hilton Head Island. You'll find displays on Gullah heritage and culture, the island's natural environment, and its rich maritime history. One landing is designated an official United States Coast Guard Museum, featuring a brilliant scale model of the 295-foot Coast Guard training ship Eagle, a unique tall ship still on active duty.

At the top, an observation deck rewards climbers with sweeping panoramic views of Calibogue Sound, Daufuskie Island, and the surrounding Lowcountry marshes. On clear days, you can see for miles across the water and barrier islands. It's a perfect spot for photography and simply soaking in the coastal scenery.

The lighthouse is located within the Sea Pines Resort community. There is a $9 cash gate fee to enter Sea Pines, separate from the lighthouse admission of $7.50 per person. Children 5 and under are admitted free. A gift shop at the base offers locally inspired souvenirs and artwork.

Harbour Town itself is a charming waterfront village with restaurants, shops, and a bustling marina. Many visitors combine a lighthouse climb with a stroll along the harbor or a meal overlooking the water. The area is also home to the famed Heritage golf tournament, and the lighthouse serves as its iconic backdrop.

Accessibility

The Harbour Town Lighthouse presents significant accessibility challenges due to its design. The climb to the observation deck requires ascending 144 steps in a narrow spiral staircase. There is no elevator, so visitors with mobility limitations will not be able to reach the upper landings or the top. Wheelchair users and those unable to manage stairs should be aware that the exhibit landings and panoramic views are only accessible via the staircase.

The ground-level areas around the lighthouse, including the gift shop and the Harbour Town village plaza, are generally flat and paved. The marina walkways and surrounding shops and restaurants sit at ground level and are more accessible for visitors with mobility devices.

Parking is available in the Harbour Town area, though spaces can be limited during peak season. The Sea Pines gate fee of $9 cash is collected at the entrance to the resort community. Restroom facilities are available in the Harbour Town commercial area.

Specific details about ADA-compliant parking spaces, accessible restrooms near the lighthouse itself, sensory accommodations, or staff assistance programs are not published on the venue's website. Contact the Harbour Town Lighthouse directly at (843) 671-2318 or [email protected] for current accessibility details and to discuss any specific accommodation needs before your visit.
