About
Hagerman Fossil Beds National Monument protects 4,351 acres of rolling terrain along the Snake River in south-central Idaho. It's internationally recognized for holding one of the richest known fossil deposits from the Pliocene era, roughly 3 to 4 million years ago. The star of the collection is the Hagerman Horse, the earliest known member of the modern horse genus Equus, and Idaho's official state fossil.
The monument's visitor center sits one mile north of downtown Hagerman on US Highway 30. Inside, you'll find fossil displays, interpretive exhibits, and knowledgeable staff ready to answer questions about the site's deep history. It's a great starting point before heading out to explore.
Beyond the fossils, the monument preserves visible ruts from the Oregon Trail. The Oregon Trail Overlook offers a window into the journeys of 19th-century emigrants who passed through this same stretch of land. Standing there, you can trace the path they carved into the earth more than 150 years ago.
A few practical things to know before you visit. There are no entrance fees. Parking is available at the visitor center and at the Oregon Trail Overlook, though spaces are limited. The site can accommodate cars, smaller RVs, and motorcycles, but larger vehicles may have trouble. There's no overnight parking allowed. And fossil collecting is strictly prohibited anywhere within the monument - everything here is protected.
The town of Hagerman is small but welcoming, with a few local dining options and access to Thousand Springs State Park nearby. From Twin Falls, the drive north on US Highway 30 takes about 30 to 40 minutes. Spring and fall are ideal visiting seasons, as summer temperatures can climb high in the valley.
Whether you're a fossil enthusiast, a history buff, or simply looking for a quiet and meaningful stop on an Idaho road trip, Hagerman Fossil Beds offers something genuinely rare. Few places let you stand where ancient animals roamed and pioneer wagons rolled, all in one visit.
Accessibility
Hagerman Fossil Beds National Monument offers several accessibility features for visitors with disabilities. The visitor center includes wheelchair-accessible walkways and accessible restrooms. Accessible parking spaces are available at the visitor center.
For visitors who are blind or have low vision, the site provides Braille materials and Braille signage. Audio description is also available. Service animals are welcome throughout the monument.
The facility features curb cuts to assist wheelchair users and others with mobility needs in transitioning between surfaces.
It's important to note that the monument's outdoor terrain consists of undeveloped, hilly ground along the Snake River bluffs. Trail surfaces and conditions may vary, and some areas could present challenges for wheelchair users or visitors with limited mobility. The Oregon Trail Overlook parking area is separate from the visitor center, and conditions at that location may differ.
Parking is limited overall, with a small number of spaces at the visitor center and additional spots at the overlook. There are no fees to enter or park.
For the most current information on trail accessibility, seasonal conditions, or specific accommodation needs, contact the monument directly at 208-933-4105 or write to PO Box 570, Hagerman, ID 83332. Staff can provide details on which areas are most accessible during your planned visit and help you plan a comfortable experience.
