About

Gulf Islands National Seashore stretches across the Mississippi coastline, offering some of the most beautiful undeveloped barrier island beaches in the entire United States. The park protects a chain of islands and mainland areas where sugar-white sand meets the warm, turquoise waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

The Mississippi district of the park includes Davis Bayou Area on the mainland near Ocean Springs, as well as the offshore barrier islands - most notably West Ship Island, which draws thousands of visitors each year. Davis Bayou is the primary mainland hub, home to the William M. Colmer Visitor Center, campgrounds, picnic areas, and nature trails winding through coastal marshes and live oak forests draped in Spanish moss.

West Ship Island is a real highlight. You can reach it by ferry from Gulfport Small Vessel Harbor or the Margaritaville Resort in Biloxi. The ferry ride takes about an hour and drops you at an island with pristine beaches, clear water perfect for swimming, and historic Fort Massachusetts, a Civil War-era brick fortification you can tour with a ranger.

Birdwatchers will find the park rewarding year-round. Shorebirds, pelicans, herons, and osprey are common sights along the beaches and bayous. Fishing is popular both from the Davis Bayou pier and in the surrounding waters. Kayakers and paddleboarders enjoy exploring the calm bayou waters.

The Davis Bayou campground offers 51 sites with water and electric hookups, making it a comfortable base for extended stays. Several picnic pavilions are available for day visitors. The visitor center features exhibits on barrier island ecology, Gulf Coast history, and the cultural heritage of the region.

Plan to visit between March and November for the warmest weather and ferry service to Ship Island. Summer brings the best swimming conditions but also the most crowds. Spring and fall offer pleasant temperatures with fewer visitors. Be prepared for sun exposure - shade is limited on the islands, so bring sunscreen, hats, and plenty of water.

Accessibility

The William M. Colmer Visitor Center at Davis Bayou is wheelchair accessible, with exhibits and information available on the main level. Park rangers at the visitor center can assist visitors with specific accessibility needs and help plan visits based on individual requirements.

At Davis Bayou, paved pathways connect the visitor center to nearby picnic areas and parking lots. The campground has paved roads suitable for wheelchair access between sites. Accessible restroom facilities are available at the visitor center and campground area.

Reaching West Ship Island requires a ferry, and visitors with mobility considerations should contact Ship Island Excursions in advance to discuss boarding assistance and vessel accessibility. The ferry departs from Gulfport Small Vessel Harbor and the Margaritaville Resort in Biloxi. Conditions on Ship Island itself are natural and sandy, which can present challenges for wheelchair users.

Parking areas at Davis Bayou include designated accessible spaces near the visitor center and other facilities.

For the most current details on accessible trails, beach wheelchairs, or specific accommodations at Fort Massachusetts on Ship Island, contact the park directly at (228) 230-4100 or visit the NPS accessibility page for Gulf Islands National Seashore. Conditions and available accommodations can change seasonally, so calling ahead before your visit is strongly recommended.
