About
The Great Plains Nature Center sits on 240 acres of restored prairie, wetlands, and woodlands right in the heart of Wichita, Kansas. It's a rare chance to experience the wild beauty of the Great Plains without leaving the city. Best of all, admission is completely free.
Inside the Koch Habitat Hall, you'll find interactive exhibits showcasing the ecosystems that define this region, from tallgrass prairie to wooded bottomlands. Living animal displays feature native Kansas species including turtles, fish, and snakes, giving visitors an up-close look at creatures they might otherwise never encounter. The exhibits are designed to educate and inspire, making them perfect for families, school groups, and anyone curious about the natural world.
Outside, the Chisholm Creek Park trail system winds through diverse habitats where you can spot birds, deer, and other wildlife in a surprisingly peaceful setting. The trails follow Chisholm Creek and loop through wetland areas that attract an impressive variety of bird species throughout the year. Birdwatchers especially love this spot, as over 200 species have been documented in the area.
The Owl's Nest Gift Shop offers nature-themed books, toys, and gifts. Weekly programs and seasonal events keep things fresh for repeat visitors. Staff and volunteers are passionate about connecting people with nature and are happy to answer questions or guide your experience.
The center is operated through a partnership between the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, and the Wichita Department of Park and Recreation. This collaboration means the facility is well maintained and the programming stays strong.
Plan to spend one to two hours here, though birdwatchers and trail lovers could easily fill a half day. The center is open year-round, though hours vary by season. Check their website before visiting for the latest schedule. It's a wonderful, low-key outing that works for solo explorers, couples, and families alike.
