About
Great Basin National Park protects Lehman Caves, high desert basins, bristlecone pine country, dark skies, and the alpine environment of Wheeler Peak. The park is remote and spread across varied elevations, so accessibility is strongest at visitor facilities, selected trails, some campsites, and carefully arranged interpretive programs. NPS explicitly encourages visitors to contact the park for accessibility planning.
For mobility access, the park identifies two trails built to ADA standards. Sky Island Forest Trail is a 0.4-mile route near the top of the paved Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive, using boardwalk and matted surface through high-elevation forest with minor grades. Shoshone ADA Trail begins at the end of gravel Snake Creek Road and travels about 0.1 mile on graded gravel to a Snake Creek overlook. Most campgrounds have wheelchair-accessible sites, although availability and first-come use require planning.
Lehman Caves access is limited but not completely absent. NPS says brief tours of the first room, the Gothic Palace, may be available for visitors unable to negotiate the stairs and narrow passageways of the regular route. A ranger escorts participants out of the cave, another companion must assist visitors in non-motorized wheelchairs, wheelchairs are not available at the park, and staffing can affect availability.
Communication and sensory supports include assistive listening devices at the Lehman Caves Visitor Center and Astronomy Amphitheater, hard-coded captions on the official park film, caption options for the virtual cave tour, telephone relay information, braille brochure options, audio-described brochure materials, tactile exhibits at visitor centers, and audio description for the park film. Service animals are allowed in park facilities, Lehman Caves, and on trails under NPS policy.
Accessibility
NPS identifies two ADA-standard trail options: Sky Island Forest Trail, a 0.4-mile boardwalk and matted-surface route with minor grades, and Shoshone ADA Trail, a 0.1-mile graded-gravel route reached by gravel Snake Creek Road. Most campgrounds have wheelchair-accessible sites.
Lehman Caves access is limited. Brief first-room Gothic Palace tours may be available for visitors who cannot manage the standard stairs and narrow passageways, but staffing affects availability, visitors using non-motorized wheelchairs need a companion to assist, and the park does not loan wheelchairs.
Assistive listening devices are available at the Lehman Caves Visitor Center and Astronomy Amphitheater, the park film has hard-coded captions, the virtual cave tour has caption options, and the park offers braille and audio-described brochure formats. Visitor centers include tactile exhibits and multisensory experiences.
