About
Fredericksburg & Spotsylvania National Military Park preserves several Civil War battlefields and historic sites across a broad Virginia landscape, including Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Wilderness, and Spotsylvania Court House. The park is not a single compact attraction; it is a network of visitor centers, historic buildings, driving routes, short trails, battle sites, and interpreted landscapes that together tell the story of campaigns with enormous human cost and national significance.
Visitors often begin at either the Fredericksburg Battlefield Visitor Center or the Chancellorsville Battlefield Visitor Center, then choose sites based on interest and time. The Sunken Road, Prospect Hill, Jackson Wounding area, Fairview, Wilderness battlefield stops, Chatham Manor, Ellwood Manor, Salem Church, and other locations each provide a different view of the war and its effects on soldiers and civilians. Because the park covers multiple places, maps and ranger advice are especially valuable.
Planning should be practical and selective. Some buildings are historic and only partly accessible; some trails are relatively smooth, while others cross swampy ground, forested areas, bridges, or uneven surfaces. Weather and seasonal operations can affect both comfort and access. Visitors who want the most efficient experience should check current conditions, decide which battlefield or theme matters most, and confirm open hours for buildings and visitor centers before arriving.
This park is especially useful for serious history travelers, school groups, families, and visitors who want a multi-stop Civil War itinerary with a mix of indoor orientation and outdoor reflection. The scale of the park rewards repeat visits. For accessibility planning, it is best to match specific sites to individual needs rather than assuming that a feature available at one battlefield visitor center applies across the entire park.
Accessibility
Official NPS guidance says park buildings and many trails are accessible with a few exceptions, and service animals are welcome in park buildings and on the grounds. The Fredericksburg Battlefield Visitor Center has a ramp to the front door, making the main floor, orientation desk, and upstairs exhibit areas accessible. Its basement is not accessible, but the 22-minute orientation film is available on the main floor, and an accessible restroom is in the adjacent accessible brick bookstore.
The Chancellorsville Battlefield Visitor Center is described as completely accessible, with orientation desk, auditorium, exhibits, bookstore, and restrooms. Listening devices with volume amplification or audio description are available for films at both visitor centers when requested at the front desk. Chatham Manor’s exhibit area is reached by ramp and has accessible restrooms in a separate building. The first floors of the Stonewall Jackson Death Site, Ellwood Manor, and Salem Church have access, though upper levels or balconies may not.
Trail access varies. NPS recommends the Sunken Road trail and Prospect Hill at Fredericksburg; the Jackson Wounding loop and sections toward Fairview at Chancellorsville, noting a non-accessible wooden bridge; and selected Wilderness trails at Tapp Field and Brock Road-Plank Road. For accommodations, call 540-693-3200 or contact the park in advance. Treat each site separately because surfaces, bridges, restrooms, and historic structures differ across the park.
