About
Nestled in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, Dollywood is one of America's most beloved theme parks. Created by Dolly Parton, the park blends thrilling rides, award-winning live entertainment, and authentic Appalachian culture into an experience that's hard to find anywhere else.
The park spans over 160 acres and features more than 50 rides and attractions, from family-friendly adventures to high-speed roller coasters. But Dollywood is about much more than rides. Master craftspeople demonstrate traditional skills like blacksmithing, glass blowing, and candle making throughout the park. The live music and shows are genuinely excellent, covering everything from bluegrass and gospel to Broadway-style productions.
Seasonal festivals keep things fresh year-round. The Festival of Nations brings international performers each spring. Summer means Splash Country water park fun. The Harvest Festival in autumn features incredible pumpkin displays and craft demonstrations. And Smoky Mountain Christmas transforms the park into a winter wonderland with millions of lights.
Dining options go well beyond typical theme park fare. You'll find Southern staples like cinnamon bread from The Grist Mill (a must-try that draws long lines for good reason), wood-fired pizza, and barbecue smoked on-site. Several sit-down restaurants offer full meals if you need a break from the excitement.
For families, Dollywood hits a sweet spot. There's enough for young kids in Wildwood Grove, plenty of thrill rides for teens and adults, and the shows and crafts appeal to grandparents too. It's one of those rare parks where three generations can genuinely enjoy a day together.
Pigeon Forge itself offers abundant lodging, from budget motels to Dollywood's own resort properties. The park is easy to reach from Knoxville, about 35 miles to the northwest. Plan for a full day at minimum, and two days if you want to take it all in without rushing.
Accessibility
Dollywood has made meaningful efforts toward accessibility, though the park's mountain terrain means some areas present challenges. Wheelchairs and ECVs are welcome throughout most of the park, but there are specific areas where they're not recommended due to steep grades or narrow pathways. These locations are clearly marked on park maps, available online, on the Dollywood mobile app, and on signage throughout the grounds.
Wheelchair and ECV rentals are available at the park. At Dollywood's Splash Country water park, wheelchairs can be rented at the ticket windows near the main entrance. The water park introduced Accessibility Tubes in 2017, allowing guests with limited mobility to enjoy water attractions like the lazy river. Water wheelchairs were added in 2018, expanding options further.
Guests with disabilities can request a disability pass that provides access to reserved seating areas at the park's many live shows and entertainment venues. This is especially helpful given how popular Dollywood's performances are.
The park operates a Ride Accessibility Center (RAC) where guests can get detailed information about which rides and attractions accommodate specific needs. Each attraction has its own accessibility requirements, so checking in at the RAC early in your visit is a smart move.
Accessible restrooms are available in the park. Companion restrooms can be found at several locations for guests who need assistance.
For sensory considerations, be aware that the park can be loud and crowded, particularly during peak seasons and festivals. Some shows involve strobe lighting and pyrotechnics. Contact Dollywood's guest services before your visit for current details on sensory-friendly options, quiet spaces, and any recent accessibility updates. Their team can help you plan a visit tailored to your specific needs.
