About
Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix, Arizona, is one of the most remarkable botanical gardens in the world, dedicated entirely to the beauty and diversity of desert plants. Spread across 140 acres in Papago Park, the garden is home to more than 50,000 plants representing thousands of species from deserts around the globe, including one of the finest collections of cacti and succulents anywhere.
Visitors can wander through five themed trails that wind past towering saguaros, vibrant wildflowers, and sculptural agave plants. The Desert Discovery Loop Trail offers an excellent introduction to Sonoran Desert ecology, while the Plants and People of the Sonoran Desert Trail explores the deep connections between indigenous communities and desert plants. Seasonal exhibits, butterfly pavilions, and outdoor art installations add layers of interest throughout the year.
The garden is especially magical during certain times of day and year. Early morning visits offer cooler temperatures and active wildlife, including hummingbirds and roadrunners. Spring wildflower season transforms the landscape with bursts of color. The popular Las Noches de las Luminarias event in December lines the trails with thousands of glowing luminaria bags for a truly unforgettable evening experience.
Plan to spend at least two to three hours exploring. The garden is open daily, with hours varying by season. There is a cafe on-site serving light meals and drinks, along with a well-stocked gift shop featuring local art and desert-themed items. Parking is available on-site. The location inside Papago Park also puts visitors close to the Phoenix Zoo and hole-in-the-rock hiking trails for a full day of outdoor exploration.
Whether you are a plant enthusiast, a photographer, or simply someone looking for a peaceful place to connect with nature, Desert Botanical Garden delivers an experience that is both educational and deeply calming.
Accessibility
Desert Botanical Garden is fully accessible to visitors who use wheelchairs and other mobility devices. Most trails throughout the garden are paved and stroller-friendly, making them navigable for manual and power wheelchairs. One hill on the grounds is a bit steeper but is still reported as accessible by visitors who use wheelchairs.
The garden offers wheelchair and electric scooter rentals on a first-come, first-served basis. Scooter rentals are $40 for general visitors and $35 for members. Because availability is not guaranteed, visitors who rely on mobility equipment are encouraged to bring their own or call ahead to check availability.
On-site parking is available, and accessible parking spaces are provided near the entrance. Restroom facilities are located throughout the garden grounds.
The garden paths are largely outdoors on desert terrain, so visitors should prepare for sun exposure, warm temperatures, and bright light, especially during summer months. Sunscreen and water are recommended. The garden gift shop sells sunscreen and other supplies.
For visitors with sensory sensitivities, the garden is an open-air environment with natural sounds and minimal loud noise outside of special events. Some evening and seasonal events may include music and crowds.
Contact Desert Botanical Garden directly for the most current details on specific accommodations, including availability of assistive listening devices, large-print materials, service animal policies, and accommodations for visitors with visual impairments.
