About
Chimney Rock State Park rises above the Hickory Nut Gorge in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina. The park's centerpiece is a 315-foot granite monolith that towers over Lake Lure and the surrounding peaks, offering panoramic views that stretch for 75 miles on a clear day. It's one of the most recognizable natural landmarks in the Southeast.
The park covers more than 7,000 acres of rugged mountain terrain. Visitors can explore several hiking trails ranging from easy walks to strenuous climbs, including the trail to 404-foot Hickory Nut Falls, one of the tallest waterfalls east of the Mississippi. The Skyline and Cliff Trail loops wind along rocky outcrops with dramatic overlooks at every turn.
One of the park's most remarkable features is an elevator tunnel carved directly through the heart of the mountain. This 26-story elevator shaft, blasted through solid granite, carries visitors up to the Sky Lounge level near the top of the Chimney. From there, a short walk leads to the famous viewing platform perched on top of the rock spire itself.
The park's gift shop and deli sit near the upper parking area, making it easy to grab a snack or souvenir before or after exploring. Picnic areas are scattered throughout the grounds for those who want to linger and soak in the mountain air.
Chimney Rock State Park is open year-round, though hours vary by season. Fall brings spectacular foliage, while spring wildflowers carpet the forest floor. The park charges an admission fee, and arriving early on weekends is recommended to avoid crowds. It's located just 25 miles southeast of Asheville, making it an easy day trip from one of North Carolina's most popular mountain towns.
Accessibility
Chimney Rock State Park offers partial wheelchair accessibility, though the rugged mountain terrain presents significant challenges for visitors with mobility limitations. The Chimney itself and the hiking trails are not wheelchair accessible, so it's important to plan accordingly.
The park's most notable accessibility feature is a wheelchair-accessible elevator carved inside the mountain. When operational, this elevator takes visitors from the interior tunnel up to the Sky Lounge patio level near the top of the Chimney. This provides access to dramatic views without climbing stairs or trails. A wheelchair is also available for loan at the park, though availability may vary.
The upper parking area includes accessible parking, and the view from this lot is nearly as spectacular as the view from the Chimney's summit. The gift shop and deli are wheelchair accessible, and there is an accessible restroom in the upper parking area. The Meadows restroom area features paved surfaces with one marked accessible parking space.
Visitors should be aware that the elevator may occasionally be out of service for maintenance. It's wise to call ahead to confirm elevator availability before making the trip, especially if elevator access is essential to your visit. The trails throughout the park involve uneven, rocky terrain with steep grades that are not suitable for wheelchairs or many mobility devices.
Contact Chimney Rock State Park directly at (828) 625-9611 for current accessibility details, elevator status, and any accommodations that may be available for visitors with specific needs.
