About
Brookfield Zoo Chicago, spanning 216 acres in suburban Brookfield, Illinois, is home to more than 2,000 animals representing 450 species. Since opening in 1934, it has been a beloved destination for families, wildlife enthusiasts, and anyone who appreciates the wonder of the natural world.
The zoo is organized into distinct habitat areas that transport you across continents. Tropic World immerses you in lush rainforest environments where primates swing overhead. The Living Coast takes you from rocky shorelines to underwater kelp forests teeming with life. Great Bear Wilderness showcases grizzly bears, polar bears, and bison in spacious naturalistic settings. And the Hamill Family Play Zoo gives younger visitors hands-on opportunities to connect with animals and nature through interactive exhibits.
Seasonal events add extra layers of excitement throughout the year. Holiday Magic transforms the zoo into a winter wonderland with millions of lights, while summer brings extended hours and special programming. The Butterflies & Blooms exhibit, open in warmer months, lets you walk among hundreds of free-flying butterflies in a gorgeous garden setting.
Dining options range from quick bites to sit-down meals, with food stands and cafes spread across the grounds. A gift shop near each gate carries souvenirs and essentials. Parking is available in large lots near both the North and South Gates, though arriving early on weekends is a good idea.
Brookfield Zoo sits about 14 miles west of downtown Chicago and is reachable by car or Metra train (the Hollywood station on the BNSF line is a short walk from the South Gate). Plan for at least half a day to see the highlights, though you could easily spend a full day exploring everything the zoo has to offer.
Whether you're watching dolphins leap during a presentation or quietly observing a gorilla family, Brookfield Zoo delivers memorable experiences that inspire a deeper appreciation for wildlife.
Accessibility
Brookfield Zoo is committed to welcoming guests of all abilities. Wheelchairs and Electric Conveyance Vehicles (ECVs) are available for rental at both the North and South Gates. Reservations can be made by calling (708) 688-8347, and the South Gate entrance is recommended for easier access.
The zoo offers BZ Care Kits available at both gates, which include sensory support items for guests who may benefit from them. A dedicated Sensory Room is located inside the Hamill Family Play Zoo, providing a calm space for visitors who need a break from stimulation. On the fourth Sunday of each month, the zoo hosts sensory-friendly mornings with reduced noise and adjusted lighting in select areas.
Assistive listening devices are available near the South Gate for guests who need them. Service animals are welcome throughout the zoo grounds.
For guests requiring specific accommodations such as sign language interpreters or other auxiliary aids, the zoo asks that requests be submitted at least 14 days in advance through their ADA Accommodation Request Form. The ADA Coordinator can also be reached directly at (708) 688-8559.
Pathways throughout the zoo are generally paved and accessible, connecting major exhibits and amenities. Accessible restrooms are located at multiple points across the grounds.
