About
Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park protects one of the most dramatic canyon landscapes in North America. The Gunnison River has carved through some of the oldest exposed rock on the continent, creating walls that drop nearly 2,000 feet in places. The sheer scale of the canyon, combined with the dark, ancient gneiss and schist rock, makes this park feel genuinely unlike anywhere else.
The South Rim is the park's main hub and its most visitor-friendly area. A paved scenic drive connects a series of overlooks, each offering a different perspective on the canyon's staggering depth. Pulpit Rock Overlook and Chasm View Overlook are among the most popular stops, and the views are genuinely jaw-dropping even on a quick visit.
The South Rim Visitor Center is a great starting point. It's housed in a newer log building with a large wooden deck overlooking the canyon, so you can take in the scenery right away. Staff can help orient you to the park and share current conditions, trail closures, and accessibility updates.
Beyond the overlooks, the park offers ranger programs, wildlife watching, and stargazing opportunities. The canyon walls block significant light pollution, making Black Canyon a certified International Dark Sky Park. Summer evenings sometimes feature ranger-led astronomy programs worth planning around.
The North Rim and East Portal areas are more remote and have far fewer accessible facilities, so most visitors with accessibility needs will want to focus their time on the South Rim. Come prepared with layers since the canyon rim sits above 8,000 feet and temperatures can shift quickly.
Accessibility
The South Rim Visitor Center is fully accessible, with accessible parking, paved sidewalks, and wheelchair-accessible vault toilets throughout the area. The building features a large wooden deck overlooking the canyon that is reachable without stairs. Note that visitor center doors do not have automatic push-button openers.
Several South Rim overlooks are accessible for visitors using wheelchairs or mobility aids, including Tomichi Point Overlook and Chasm View Overlook. Always confirm current trail status with the visitor center before your visit.
The South Rim Campground has two designated accessible campsites: A21 and B1. Both feature level concrete pads with ramps, and the paths to nearby vault toilets and the campsite pay station are paved. All vault toilets in the South Rim area are wheelchair accessible. There is no plumbed water or flush toilets at the South Rim.
The North Rim and East Portal sections of the park have limited accessible facilities and are not recommended as primary destinations for visitors with mobility needs. The South Rim offers the best combination of accessibility and canyon views.
