About

Balboa Park is the cultural heart of San Diego and one of the most remarkable urban parks in the United States. Spread across 1,200 acres, the park houses 17 museums, multiple performing arts venues, beautiful gardens, the San Diego Zoo, and miles of walking paths lined with Spanish Colonial Revival architecture that dates back to the 1915 Panama-California Exposition.

The park's central promenade, El Prado, is a tree-lined walkway flanked by ornate buildings that look like they belong in Seville rather than Southern California. Along this corridor you will find the San Diego Museum of Art, the Natural History Museum, the Fleet Science Center with its IMAX dome theater, the Comic-Con Museum, and the Mingei International Museum, among others. The Botanical Building, one of the largest lath structures in the world, houses a lush collection of tropical plants and is one of the most photographed spots in San Diego.

Beyond the museums, the park offers over a dozen themed gardens, including the Japanese Friendship Garden with its koi ponds and tea pavilion, the Alcazar Garden modeled after the gardens of Alcazar Castle in Seville, and the Inez Grant Parker Memorial Rose Garden with over 2,400 rose bushes. The Spreckels Organ Pavilion houses one of the world's largest outdoor pipe organs, with free Sunday afternoon concerts year-round.

Just across the bay, Coronado Island (technically a peninsula) is home to Coronado Beach, consistently rated among the best beaches in America. The Hotel del Coronado, a Victorian landmark built in 1888, anchors the beachfront. The island's flat terrain, wide sidewalks, and charming village center make it pleasant to explore. A scenic ferry ride connects Coronado to downtown San Diego's waterfront.

Both destinations are easily combined into a full day or weekend trip, with Balboa Park offering culture and Coronado delivering coastal relaxation.

Accessibility

Balboa Park is largely accessible, with most museums, pathways, and facilities designed to accommodate wheelchair users and visitors with disabilities.

The Balboa Park Visitors Center at the House of Hospitality offers mobility device rentals through a partnership with Scootaround: two manual wheelchairs and three four-wheel electric scooters are available on a first-come, first-served basis for daily use within the park (excluding the San Diego Zoo and parts of the Japanese Friendship Garden). Rentals are per day at varying rates. The wheelchair-accessible entrance to the Visitors Center is on the north side along El Prado Road. Call (619) 230-0512, ext. 8 for information.

Most park museums are wheelchair accessible. Mingei has elevators to all levels and two wheelchairs for in-museum use. The Japanese Friendship Garden has ADA-accessible pathways throughout and offers shuttle assistance from the Lower Garden back to the Upper Garden on request, plus Braille guides available at the front gate. The Fleet Science Center, Comic-Con Museum, Institute of Contemporary Art, and San Diego Museum of Art all provide accessibility accommodations detailed on their individual websites.

The park's main pathways along El Prado are paved and generally flat, though some areas have slopes. ADA parking is available in the Alcazar parking lot and Spreckels Organ Pavilion lot. Free trams and on-call shuttles serving the park are ADA-compliant.

On Coronado, the city operates a free Beach Wheelchair Program. Two beach wheelchairs with large, wide wheels for rolling across sand are stored at the Main Lifeguard Tower at 920 Ocean Boulevard. They are available on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservation needed. The beach has accessible restrooms and accessible parking at the foot of Calle Frescota. Coronado's flat terrain and wide sidewalks make the village center easy to navigate in a wheelchair.

Service animals are welcome throughout Balboa Park and at Coronado Beach.
