About

Badlands National Park is a striking expanse of sharply eroded pinnacles, buttes, and spires rising from the mixed-grass prairie of southwestern South Dakota. The park protects one of the world's richest fossil beds, with ancient remains of horses, rhinos, and saber-toothed cats embedded in its layered rock formations. It's a place where 75 million years of geological history are on full display.

The park's most popular experience is the Badlands Loop Road (Highway 240), a 31-mile scenic drive with frequent pullouts and overlooks. You can take in dramatic views without ever leaving your vehicle, or stop at accessible trails along the way. The Fossil Exhibit Trail features a boardwalk with wayside exhibits showcasing replica fossils, and the Window Trail leads to a framed view of a deeply carved canyon. Both offer paved or boardwalk surfaces suitable for many visitors with mobility needs.

Beyond the formations, Badlands is home to bison, bighorn sheep, prairie dogs, and one of the largest mixed-grass prairies in the country. The Roberts Prairie Dog Town, visible from the road, is a favorite stop for families. Sunrises and sunsets here are extraordinary, painting the striped rock in shifting shades of gold, red, and purple.

The Ben Reifel Visitor Center is your best first stop. It houses excellent exhibits on geology and paleontology, a bookstore, and a park film that runs throughout the day. Rangers offer talks and programs seasonally, and the center's staff can help you plan your visit based on your interests and accessibility needs.

The park is open year-round, though summer brings the most visitors and the fullest schedule of ranger programs. Spring and fall offer cooler temperatures and thinner crowds. Cedar Pass Lodge, located near the visitor center, provides food service and cabin accommodations during its operating season.

Accessibility

Both the Ben Reifel Visitor Center and White River Visitor Center are wheelchair accessible, with ramped entrances, reserved parking, and accessible restrooms. The Ben Reifel Visitor Center includes a tactile experience area where visitors can touch and hold fossils and rocks. The park film is open captioned, and listening devices are available for those with hearing impairments.

Several trails offer accessible options. The Fossil Exhibit Trail features a boardwalk with wayside fossil exhibits. The boardwalk portion of the Door Trail, leading to The Door viewpoint, is wheelchair accessible. The Window Trail also has an accessible section. Visitors using wheelchairs or mobility equipment should be aware that some trail portions have uneven surfaces, and all-terrain tires may be helpful on certain paths.

Cedar Pass Campground has two fully wheelchair-accessible campsites in the Agate Loop and one accessible site in the group loop. These sites are designated for wheelchair users but operate on a first-come, first-served basis and may not be available when the campground is full.

The Badlands Loop Road scenic drive allows visitors to experience the park's most dramatic views from their vehicle. Pullouts and overlooks along the route provide stopping points with varying levels of accessibility. Contact the park at (605) 433-5361 or visit the Ben Reifel Visitor Center for current trail conditions and to discuss specific accessibility needs with staff.
