About

Highway 30A is an 18-mile stretch of coastal road in South Walton County, Florida, running between Dune Allen Beach and Inlet Beach. It connects a string of small beach communities along the Gulf of Mexico, including Grayton Beach, Seaside, WaterColor, and Rosemary Beach, each with its own town center of shops and restaurants a short walk from the sand.

The main draw is the beach itself: white sand and clear green water reached through nine county-run regional beach accesses spaced along the route. Each access point has its own parking lot, restrooms, and outdoor showers, and most post seasonal lifeguards and daily beach condition flags. Away from the sand, the Timpoochee Trail runs the length of the corridor, an 18.5-mile paved multi-use path used for biking, walking, and running, separated from car traffic for nearly its entire distance.

Most people spend anywhere from a few hours at one beach access to a full day working their way through several, stopping in the town centers along the way. Bike shops in the beach towns rent standard and electric bikes for the Timpoochee Trail, and several companies deliver beach wheelchairs and mobility scooters to rental homes and access points on request.

The western end of 30A sits about 9 miles from Destin. The eastern end, near Rosemary Beach, is roughly 20 miles from Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport (ECP) in Panama City Beach, a 25 to 30 minute drive. Santa Rosa Beach, near the middle of the corridor, is home to the Visit South Walton Visitor Information Center at 25777 US Highway 331 South, a useful first stop for maps and current beach conditions.

Accessibility

Highway 30A is wheelchair accessible in parts. Six to eight of South Walton's nine regional beach accesses meet ADA standards, but the details vary a lot from one access point to the next, and at least two public accesses on the corridor, Blue Mountain and Gulfview Heights, are stairs-only.

Arriving and parking: lot size varies widely, from about 15 spaces at the Scenic Gulf Drive access to roughly 200 at Miramar Beach. Miramar Beach, Fort Panic, Dune Allen, Ed Walline, Santa Clara, and Inlet Beach all list ADA parking and restrooms close to the boardwalk or restroom building. At Inlet Beach, the ADA route covers the center walk only, so ask an attendant which path to take.

Getting around: Miramar Beach, Santa Clara, and Dune Allen have paved or boardwalk ramps from the lot to the sand; Santa Clara's is a long switchback ramp built for a gradual grade rather than a straight run of stairs. Away from the beach itself, the Timpoochee Trail runs 18.5 miles alongside 30A between Dune Allen and Inlet Beach on a paved, flat, wide surface, though no source we found formally certifies it as ADA compliant.

Restrooms and equipment: the six ADA-listed access points above have accessible restrooms. The South Walton Fire District loans free sand wheelchairs at its main tower locations from March 1 to October 31, 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., first come, first served. Private companies such as Destin Wheels also deliver wheelchairs, beach wheelchairs, and mobility scooters to rental homes and beach accesses anywhere on 30A for a fee. Service animals are allowed on every public beach along the corridor under Walton County ordinance, without the leash-permit and evening-hours rules that apply to regular pets.

Practical tips: call the Visit South Walton Visitor Information Center at (850) 267-1216 or check an access point's listing on visitsouthwalton.com before you go, since lifeguard coverage, working restrooms, and wheelchair loans change by season. If you need step-free beach access, plan around Miramar Beach, Santa Clara, or Dune Allen and skip Blue Mountain and Gulfview Heights, which are stairs-only.
